    When ready for the ultimate, Dick's Picks 4 (2/13 & 2/14/70)

buy 3 CD Fillmore West 1969. As good as it gets before the Workingman Dead and American Beauty songs come forth. Energy level from an alternate universe.

then although not in great sound DP 8, Harpur College 5/2/70.

It's too bad so many of these releases are plagued with marathon renditions of Turn On Your Lovelight. Weir's vocals are horrendous. I don't mind him singing his own songs, but he cannot sing blues, vintage rock n roll, or other material that requires any kind of range of expression, because he has none.

I never bothered to buy a Dead album for almost 40 years, but now I'm getting into it. I actually plucked  8 CDs out of the Barnes & Noble bargain bin.  Mostly studio albums from '67-'74. And I got Red Rocks, and Allah at another store. Kinda wish I would've skipped Allah and got a copy of One From The Vault instead. And I definitely should have skipped Terrapin Station. But these digi-pack re-issues with all of the extra material are a good thing. Anthem Of The Sun is great! But the '71 live album is my favorite. Great material, sound, and wonderful performances.

VALVE NO. 10 with Frank Lowe is a favorite. Really, all of his Soul Note recordings are worth a listen; after VALVE NO. 10 I'd single out RAINBOW GLADIATOR with Charles Tyler, the Stuff Smith tribute with Sun Ra and John Ore, and the LIVE AT CARLOS I date.

I hope CamJazz releases a BS/SN box in the future.

Low Profile is an overlooked gem with stunning playing from a young Dave Douglas

Listening now. Very adventurous playing! I'm always looking through the enja catalogue for good stuff. It's too bad Wide Open spaces is out of print. I definitely want that one!

  7. Never did hear that album. Gate was making some good records right up until the end. I got to hang with him for a bit when he sat down on the lawn next to me to listen to Robert Lockwood's big band. And later that night he took the stage with his own big band. This was in the late 90s when he was doing his Gate Swings material.
