  1. I've got some killer Orchestra seats. After an early dinner at Musso-Frank and a couple of cocktails I should be ready. Never seen/heard her group live. Can't say I love her albums, but so many have told be she has to be heard/seen live . . .
  2. Marion Brown-Afternoon of a Geogia Faun-ECM Albert Ayler--Swing Low Sweet Spiritual--Osmosis Hyde Park After Dark--(Von Freeman)-- Beehive
  3. Clifford Jordan Blue Note 1565 original deep groove mono
  4. I have a bunch of these Mono promos from the early Liberty era. They are DJ "fold-downs" of the stereo mix for radio play (I wonder how much air time Cecil Taylor was getting back in '67?). None of them have the RVG in the dead wax, but they sound fine. The only reason to buy them is because you collect all that is Blue Note. That's why I have them, but I wouldn't pay more than $20 for any of them . . . .
  5. I think it was the loose, kinda ragged ensemble blowing that kept this one on the shelf. Morgan's and Brooks' soling is superb throughout. Lee's solo on "The Way You Look Tonight" boils down everything Lee Morgan could say at age 21--pretty freaking impressive!!
  6. That's one record I've been looking for for about 25 years. Passed on a copy at $150 a few years back--guess I should have bought it. Just finished spinning ESP 1053 -- Frank Wright 5 "Your Prayer" I listen to this one about once a year.
  7. Mine is Strange Strings... Or maybe Ornette Coleman at the Golden Circle?
  8. Sun Ra "Discipline 27-II" original El Saturn
  9. My favorite "with strings" LP (other than Bird) is a wacky record from Bill Perkins on Liberty called 'Bossa Nova with Strings Attached." Perk LOVED this record--he and I talked about many, many times. He had a bunch of guys from the LA Philharmonic and killer players (Mel Lewis and Victor Feldman to name two).
  10. "You Get More Bounce with Curtis Counce" original Contemporary mono
  11. I just unloaded my copy of that record, strangely. Maybe shouldn't have, but oh well... Kenny Dorham's last hurrah--and it's a fine one . . .
  12. Cecil Payne "Zodiac" Strata East
  13. Lem Winchester "Another Opus" Prestige New Jazz mono
  14. 'Cause I don't know what to get after "Unity" ... what could be better ? Blackstone Legacy?
  15. Most "Cobb Snobs" point to the early honking wild-ass sides from the late 40's and tend to downplay the dates recorded after his horrific car wreck in the mid-1950's. But I think his best work was for Prestige where he made a whole GAGGLE of albums in the late 50's/early 60's-- they're all about the same and they're all pretty damn good. My favorite is "Smooth Sailing," but I think you should start here: Party Time with Arnett Cobb
  16. I'm pretty sure I have an extra 47W63rd mono copy of this one with the "ear" and the original inner sleeve. If I remember right it's in SOLID VG condition and plays good--a bit of surface noise here and there, but still a nice original copy. I was going to ebay it one day, but if anyone here needs it . . . What's it worth? $75? Something like that?
  17. Clifford Jordan "Soul Fountain" Vortex Stereo Baby Face Willette "Face to Face" Blue Note mono (47W63rd) John Patton "Got a Good Thing Goin'" Blue Note mono original Freddie Roach "Down to Earth" Blue Note mono original
  18. I'm at square zero. I have never heard a single tune from ANY of the bands you guys are talking about. I stopped lisenting to rock music 25 years ago. Can't say I missed anything . . .
  19. I met Miles Davis one night at Catalina's, the venerable LA jazz club, around 1990 or so. I was there to hear Dizzy (mostly because Sam Rivers was in the band!) and was sitting at a table right up front. Right behind me in one of the few booths at the old Catalina's along the far wall opposite the bar sat Miles Davis with a couple of guys I did not recognize. I was there with a pal of mine who DARED me to go up and say "hi" to Miles Davis. Well, I had a couple of drinks in me and figured "what the hell" and walked over and said as POLITELY as I could "hello Mr. Davis--I just wanted to tell you how much your music has meant to me over the years." He looked at me, then smiled and asked my name and asked me to SIT DOWN, We talked for about five minutes and he drew a little pic of himself playing his horn on a cocktail napkin and signed it and handed it to me. Nicecst mothefucker you could ever meet, that Miles Davis. My friend was BLOWN AWAY.
  20. Bud Powell "The Scene Changes" Blue Note original deep grovve mono Duke Pearson "Tender Feelins'" Blue Note original deep groove mono Hampton Hawes "Everybody Loves Hampton Hawes vol. 3" Contemporary deep groove mono Freddie Redd/Hampton Hawes "Piano East/Piano West" Prestige deep groove mono "The Ray Bryant Trio" Prestige deep groove mono
  21. Horace Parlan and Archie Shepp "Trouble in Mind" Steeplechase
  22. I have a handful of these records--"New and Old Gospel," "Andrew!," "Natural Essense" plus a couple of others I can't think of right now. They all come in Stereo jackets with a small sticker over the "Stereo" on the front of the jacket that says "MONO-- Audtion-Not for Sale." They have the Microgroove label and the catalog number on the label is MONO (4262 as opposed to 84262). Does anyone know if these are dedicated mono mixes? Or are they "fold-downs?" They sound GREAT!
  23. Dude made some REALLY good records with some REALLY REALLY good bands and arrangers. I mean, just listen to the records! They are VERY appealing to a WIDE WIDE audience without being crap--and that's a really tough thing to achieve.
  24. I have seen or owned a number of different pressings. The most desireable to collectors is the one on ebay--47 W 63rd labels with no "Inc" on both sides--deep groove. There are also deep groove pressings with the later "Inc." labels on one or both sides! And I have seen a copy with the 47 W 63rd "Inc" label on one side and "New York USA" on the other! And you have the "New York USA" deep groove version. This leads me to believe that this record went through MANY pressings, but that they were separated by a few years.
  25. The only record I have that might fetch that is my NM 1568. Other than the jacket having SLIGHTLY yellowed and one unfeelable scuff it's perfect.
