  3. Hey, i just picked up the Oliva disc at Paris Jazz Corner last week - they had a bundle in stock so could prob supply via their internet site...only one quick sample listen so far but it sounded promising.. the brooding piano thing can be a bit tricky to sustain over a whole album so I need to see if it stands up to a couple of repeats

  4. I'm surprised and shocked how much the neighbourhood looks to have changed..I stayed at a friends place on Norfolk Street around 15 years ago...I remember it being a pretty rough area, nothing like the photo's posted above. Has all of the lower east side gone this way ?

  5. I have an elderly relative who has asked me if I can sell this..but I'm thinking if its not too expensive I'll just give them the cash and take it for myself. Any one got a rough value ? E- Bay has a mint copy going for $50..the copy I have is probably arounf VG (i am not an expert grader, but it plays very well but the cover has lost some of its gloss/shine). I dont want to short change my aunt so would like to pay what its worth. Any suggestions gratefully received.

I've tried to paste the cover shot below but not confident that it was successful.

  6. cheerio Brazil. thanks for your interest but I think on this occasion I think that we'll stick with a European Final. Ha bloody Ha ! Football is coming home after all. I'm so pleased to see the smug, arrogant, bloated Brazilians on the way home. Its about time someone realised they were there for the taking. well done les bleues..

  7. I checked with the buying public, and Chuck is correct, if released in the US my scientific survey shows it will only sell 579 copies.

    Of the 579 ;

530 would be bought by people curious about the date

32 would be bought by Flanagan nutcases (completists ?) who already had the TOCJ version

13 copies would be bought Bernstein completists (nutcases ?)

1 copy would be bought by a Rodgers & Hammerstein fan who got confused in the excitement

1 copy would be bought by an elderly gent in Indiana who was trying out the internet for the first time, and got confused and thought he was getting a copy of Sinatra's "This Town"

and a further 2 import copies will get lost in the back office of HMV on Oxford Street (the one by Bond Street station).

    100% accurate and documented.

  8. I was there too...I agree that the music comes across so much better live, especially the stuff from the latest release...I was listening to that cd on the way home and it sounded much thinner.

I thought the band were a little mixed, with some highs and lows, but one thing that made my Wife and I really laugh was the look on the (young) guitarists face whenever he wasn't soloing..he looked so bored, like a petulant teenager !

BTW, I sat behind Gerald's wife and daughter for the secondhalf of the show, and found myself clapping harder than normal to compensate for the lowish turnout.

And re. the turnout I agree, what a shame .. whenever is there going to be another chance ....?

  9. Just got the following news concerning Frog Records. I wasn't aware that David French had died and was therefore a little shocked when I read it.

"Following the recent deaths of David and my sister, FROG RECORDS is now out of hibernation, though perhaps not quite hopping yet! Please bear with us. If you have urgent requests outstanding, please now send me an e-mail at the same e-mail address. DGF55 Earl Hines is now available.

Meantime, I hope to hear from you in the New Year and I wish you all the peace of Christmas and for me, better luck in 2005. Dawn Leppard"

  10. Alphaville is in a slightly different vein than Breathless/A Bout de Souffle (more sci-fi than gangster on the run), but still uses a "classical" narrative format. In the early run of films Le Mepris/Contempt is my favourite. Soon after Godard abandoned narrative cinema for a more polemic style - these may/may not be up your street. After about 1980 he returned to narratives again and a couple of years ago released Eloge de l'amour, which is also highly rated....

  11. Just got notification from David French at Frog of the following ; I have just issued DGF55, Earl Hines. The bulk of the CD covers the 1929 Victor band recordings plus nine alternate takes of the Decca/Brunswick sides that were not included on the recent Hep issue.
