How's the Red Sox nation doing this early morn???
-
sorry for my less than perfect tutoring of Berigan in this respect... he was faster than I assume, was done with everything and sent me the links before I could give my final tips... a fast learner, so to say I really don't know what the heck I was doing most of the time, just following instructions....I was bugging KU enough, wasn't going to put my luck with every little problem that came along! I had all kinds of problems trying to number files in the Tag program. I had numbered 1-9 with no problems, then got to 10 and it went to the top of the list! I was terrified I would screw up the order, then start confusing what people heard with the list I had made(There's no Banjo on track 5, are smoking crack?) Plus, the only time I had burned cds in the past was when I sold something, or put 2 short albums on one cd. Never made a playlist before, and Windows media may not be the best system to use, but it's what I was familiar with. I even had to take the copy of a burn, and put it back on the hardrive for some reason that escapes me right now. And my 2002 computer is starting to age. Can anyone explain why cds play like a tape going the wrong speed, but the files copied on the computer from said cds play correctly??? It's almost like less memory is used playing the copied files than spinning a cd!
-
Funny, wma is my favorite file format. In fact, I'd marry it if I could! I just did what the nice windows media player told me to do. I don't know how to make mp3's
-
Well, I made some discs thinking more people would want them shipped, so I will mail you out the pair. I have enough coasters as it is!

-
Hailstorm, correct??? If it was, how big were those suckers???

When you uploaded these to RapidShare did you use WinRar to automatically split them into less than 100mb per file? That's the maximum capacity for one RS URL. If you have one CD in three parts they should unpack together on download and you will end up with the complete contents of the CD in one folder. You have to start by unpacking part one; WinRar should automatically continue on to parts two and three. Yes, I used WinRar to split the files into 100 MB or less(KU learned me about that) When downloading porn other media in the past, I was not able to play just part one, like you said, you needed all of it. I can download a part of this, like part 3(It downloaded fine today, unlike Friday night) extract it to a folder, and play the songs one by one, by clicking on each file, if I want to(But, why would you want to?) I am an expert at smashing square pegs in round holes. perhaps since I still have the original music files on my computer,(And a good thing if a file or two ended up getting corrupted somehow) that's why I can play them? All I know is, I'm sleepy, and this is making my head hurt!

A foggy morn a few months back. Clearly, I am deeply in love with my neighbor's tree! The other side of our front yard...am ambivalent about it...
-
Uh-oh! I tried last night to download part 3's from each disc...but the download just stopped midway...I'll try again.....
-
Links are now available to one and all on the first post on this thread! Also a list of those that want to download, those that want cds, and those I don't know for sure what they want....please let me know if you want discs. And Spontooneous, fight the power!

Sure, just send me a PM with your Address!

Ah, interesting about unplugging the DSL modem...I seemed to have a problem uploading after completing one part, so I would just go to another browser which seemed to work....I should check that out for downloading as well....easier on my back if nothing else... I sent the links to King Ubu, so if he doesn't find any major issues, I'll put the links up here later today....and will mail out the discs to the two people(So far) that would rather have the discs...funny, after never having a cd not burn right, I have had 4 out of 8 discs fail to complete! Don't know if it's just a bad batch(In the middle of a stack of Memorex blanks) or if it's my cd burner.... Dan, good point about pointing folks to..... http://www.rarlab.com/download.htm page. Hadn't thought of that. I see a few user interfaces....graphic and command line, and graphic only....I am not kidding when I say I am clueless about this stuff, can someone mention what might be the best all around one, or if folks with Macs might have a problem with command line only? I don't even know which free version I have. (Well, just checked, evaluation copy) WinRAR 3.71 Graphic and command line Trial 1178 KB RAR 3.71 for Pocket PC Graphic only Free 263 KB RAR 3.71 for Linux Command line only Trial 759 KB RAR 3.71 for FreeBSD Command line only Trial 730 KB RAR 3.71 for Mac OS X Command line only Trial 607 KB RAR 3.71 for MS DOS <info> Command line only Trial 647 KB

Yeah, just completely unsexy. http://freewallpaperz.com/wp-content/uploa...sica-parker.jpg http://www.celebritynet.net/sitewide/black...ca_parker01.jpg -
Well....you are correct in that we have a lot of opportunities to purchase jazz that didn't exist before....but, I know that 10 years ago, I spent hours looking thru all the jazz cds at Tower and Borders and found(and purchased) tons of stuff I'd never find online...compilations, really small label stuff that you just can't find in a search on Amazon(Or would even be aware of their existence). And I think a fair number of cds we see on Amazon sellers and Ebay are out of print....why would some of these companies go to the effort to restore and release the music, if no brick and mortar stores will take a chance on selling them??? Perhaps I am just seeing this from the early jazz perspective... many of these cds have no track listings online, recording dates...no reviews, no nothing....
-
Ok, part 2. First, thanks for everyone that's willing to download the music! Now, if waiting for 6 downloads(and with free acount there, you have to wait 90 minutes per download) is a bit much, or for those that want the cds, please, let me know! I have already burned a few discs....In the U.S., it's only around a dollar to mail a disc out. And if you are low tech and overseas, I will be glad to mail em out as well..... Oh, I also wanted to say I really feel bad for never taking a chance on a BFT before!!! And it's funny, cuz I have read with interest folks trying to guess what was on a disc...(You know Sangrey has a good ear when he gets beyond the performer, and is guessing on the studio it was recorded in!) Several folks here are taking a chance on music they are not that familar with, and I think I always looked at it more as a BFT, than a chance to experience new music. I figured, I would suck at guessing, so why bother??? Lesson learned....and I will participate much more(Much more than never ) in the future! Should I post the links to the downloads now, or wait a few days til I have mailed some discs out???
-
First, have to say, king ubu has been a HUGE help with this, really don't think I could have figured out how to upload it without him, many thanks!!! He gave me info on rapidshare, and rar files....He suggested with compression and other issues to split the archives (Old music can get tinny it appears with all this stuff I don't even begin to understand happening! ) So....hope it's not a problem for folks to have them in 3 separate downloads. Wait, make that...6. Did I mention I made 2 discs worth of music???? Sorry! I don't know why, but after making many painful cuts, (I had it down to about 24 tracks, at 79 minutes) when I went to make a practice disc....it chopped off the last 3 tracks! WTF??? Then, while trying to figure out all the rapidshare, Rar, tag deleting stuff, I kept thinking of tracks I forgot about, one's that really should have been on the first disc. D'oh!!! What to do??? Go to the trouble of deleting tracks I had already written info on, and risking fouling the order all up? So, with that excuse in hand, I made another disc....so now there is a bonus disc! Lucky for everyone! Actually, I like 2 even more....and hey, it's free music, right? Funny, when it came to making disc 2, I purposely left some room, so I wouldn't have to make a 3rd disc, but it showed room, so I added a few tracks with no problem!

The Mystery of Global Warming's Missing Heat
BERIGAN posted a topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
The Mystery of Global Warming's Missing Heat by Richard Harris Morning Edition, March 19, 2008 · Some 3,000 scientific robots that are plying the ocean have sent home a puzzling message. These diving instruments suggest that the oceans have not warmed up at all over the past four or five years. That could mean global warming has taken a breather. Or it could mean scientists aren't quite understanding what their robots are telling them. This is puzzling in part because here on the surface of the Earth, the years since 2003 have been some of the hottest on record. But Josh Willis at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory says the oceans are what really matter when it comes to global warming. In fact, 80 percent to 90 percent of global warming involves heating up ocean waters. They hold much more heat than the atmosphere can. So Willis has been studying the ocean with a fleet of robotic instruments called the Argo system. The buoys can dive 3,000 feet down and measure ocean temperature. Since the system was fully deployed in 2003, it has recorded no warming of the global oceans. "There has been a very slight cooling, but not anything really significant," Willis says. So the buildup of heat on Earth may be on a brief hiatus. "Global warming doesn't mean every year will be warmer than the last. And it may be that we are in a period of less rapid warming." In recent years, heat has actually been flowing out of the ocean and into the air. This is a feature of the weather phenomenon known as El Nino. So it is indeed possible the air has warmed but the ocean has not. But it's also possible that something more mysterious is going on. That becomes clear when you consider what's happening to global sea level. Sea level rises when the oceans get warm because warmer water expands. This accounts for about half of global sea level rise. So with the oceans not warming, you would expect to see less sea level rise. Instead, sea level has risen about half an inch in the past four years. That's a lot. Willis says some of this water is apparently coming from a recent increase in the melting rate of glaciers in Greenland and Antarctica. "But in fact there's a little bit of a mystery. We can't account for all of the sea level increase we've seen over the last three or four years," he says. One possibility is that the sea has, in fact, warmed and expanded — and scientists are somehow misinterpreting the data from the diving buoys. But if the aquatic robots are actually telling the right story, that raises a new question: Where is the extra heat all going? Kevin Trenberth at the National Center for Atmospheric Research says it's probably going back out into space. The Earth has a number of natural thermostats, including clouds, which can either trap heat and turn up the temperature, or reflect sunlight and help cool the planet. That can't be directly measured at the moment, however. "Unfortunately, we don't have adequate tracking of clouds to determine exactly what role they've been playing during this period," Trenberth says. It's also possible that some of the heat has gone even deeper into the ocean, he says. Or it's possible that scientists need to correct for some other feature of the planet they don't know about. It's an exciting time, though, with all this new data about global sea temperature, sea level and other features of climate. "I suspect that we'll able to put this together with a little bit more perspective and further analysis," Trenberth says. "But what this does is highlight some of the issues and send people back to the drawing board." Trenberth and Willis agree that a few mild years have no effect on the long-term trend of global warming. But they say there are still things to learn about how our planet copes with the heat. http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.p...toryId=88520025 -

Strangely enough, considering the field she is in, she doesn't always photograph well. But, she is hardly the unsexiest woman in the world!!! She was incredibly sexy in L.A. Story. I'd take that level of unsexiness every day of the week! And what a stupid, thoughtless thing for a magazine to do! Cruelty for cruelties sake only! -
Calls Mount for Olympic Ceremony Boycott Email this Story Mar 18, 6:04 PM (ET) By JOHN LEICESTER PARIS (AP) - Moves to punish China over its handling of violence in Tibet gained momentum Tuesday, with a novel suggestion for a mini-boycott of the Beijing Olympics by VIPs at the opening ceremony. Such a protest by world leaders would be a huge slap in the face for China's Communist leadership. France's outspoken foreign minister, former humanitarian campaigner Bernard Kouchner, said the idea "is interesting." Kouchner said he wants to discuss it with other foreign ministers from the 27-nation European Union next week. His comments opened a crack in what until now had been solid opposition to a full boycott, a stance that Kouchner said remains the official government position. (AP) Protesters demonstrate against the Olympic Games in Beijing in front of the International Olympic... Full Image The idea of skipping the Aug. 8 opening ceremony "is less negative than a general boycott," Kouchner said. "We are considering it." Asked about Kouchner's statement, China's U.N. Ambassador Wang Guangya said: "Certainly I think what he said is not shared by most of the people in the world." International Olympic Committee President Jacques Rogge said last month that he expects many heads of state - including President Bush, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Nicolas Sarkozy - to attend the opening ceremony. Such an opening ceremony boycott presumably would not include the athletes, who under Olympic rules are forbidden from making any kind of protest at events or venues - including the opening ceremony. It's not mandatory that every athlete participate in the opening ceremony. "We strongly encourage our athletes to participate in opening ceremonies," said U.S. Olympic Committee spokesman Darryl Seibel. "It is a tremendous honor to walk into the Olympic Stadium behind the flag of your nation, and to do so in a ceremony honoring and celebrating athletes from around the world." (AP) A woman holds a poster against the Olympic Games in Beijing, outside the Chinese embassy in Paris,... Full Image The violent protests in Tibet, the most serious challenge in almost two decades to China's rule in the region, are forcing governments and human rights campaigners to re-examine their approach to the Aug. 8-24 games. Human Rights Watch, which has not been pushing for a boycott, may soon change its stance and urge heads of state not to go to the opening ceremony, said Sophie Richardson, the New York-based group's Asia advocacy director. So far, the group has been suggesting that foreign leaders "think long and hard" about whether they want to seen alongside China's leadership, she said in a telephone interview. "Their presence at the games is going to be represented and reported by the Chinese government as a sign of approval," she added. Prince Charles has already said he will skip the Olympics. He supports Tibet's spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, who has been living in exile since an uprising against Chinese rule in 1959. Hollywood director Steven Spielberg also withdrew in February as an artistic adviser to the opening and closing ceremonies, saying China had not done enough to halt the bloodshed in Darfur. China buys much of Sudan's oil and supplies many of the weapons used in the Darfur conflict. (AP) Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao's press conference is telecasted live on a mall screen during a day of... Full Image China is trying to stop any boycott movement from gathering steam. In the government's highest-level comment on the protests in Tibet and neighboring provinces, Premier Wen Jiabao accused the Dalai Lama and his supporters of orchestrating the violence to taint the Olympics. "The Beijing Olympics will be a grand gathering for people from around the world," Wen said. "We need to respect the principles of the Olympics and the Olympic Charter and we should not politicize the games." The International Olympic Committee has been forced to lobby against boycott calls and the possibility of the games turning into a political demonstration. The IOC's basic position, as stated repeatedly by Rogge, is that it is a sports organization and unable to pressure China or any other country on political matters. IOC spokeswoman Emmanuelle Moreau reiterated that the Olympic Charter forbids protests at any games sites. Her comment came in response to suggestions from some French lawmakers that Olympic athletes wear Tibetan armbands or scarves on medal podiums or at the opening ceremony. "It's unsportsmanlike to want to gag athletes, to follow in the footsteps of totalitarianism," said one of the lawmakers, Gerard Bapt. Moreau would not get into specifics on how the IOC might respond to protests in Beijing. "Lots of people and lots of organizations are commenting at the moment. We don't want to get dragged into the debate. We have rules and procedures, which means that when things happen, we can deal with them. We are not going to start commenting about what might, or what might not, happen," she said. The consensus is that a total boycott would only hurt the athletes, as shown by the political boycotts of the 1976, 1980 and 1984 Olympics. The Dalai Lama has also said a boycott is not the answer. European calls for a boycott of the opening ceremony predate the protests in Tibet, which began peacefully March 10 on the anniversary of the failed 1959 uprising. A Dutch lawmaker, Joel Voordewind, had already suggested last month that countries "take part in the games but skip the party beforehand." But the Tibetan unrest has added urgency to the issue by refocusing attention on China's human rights record. Even before the Tibetan protests, three-time Olympic swimming gold medalist Pieter van den Hoogenband of the Netherlands called on Rogge to speak out on behalf of all athletes urging China to improve its human rights situation. On Monday, world 50-meter butterfly champion Roland Schoeman of South Africa said the IOC "should stand up and say, 'The way these people (Tibetans) are being treated is not acceptable.'" Luciano Barra, a longtime Italian Olympic official who was deputy CEO of the 2006 Turin Winter Games, also believes the IOC should prepared to do and say more. "For a question of credibility, the public opinion will say, 'You are just thinking about the games, not thinking about millions of people and freedom," he said. About 400 people chanted a prayer and waved Tibetan flags Tuesday at a protest near the IOC headquarters in Lausanne, Switzerland. Wangpo Tethong, who presides over the self-declared Tibetan National Olympic Committee, said Rogge "must clearly denounce the killings and force China to stop it." For some Olympic watchers, the violent demonstrations in Tibet come as no surprise and are something the IOC can't be expected to resolve. "This is what people anticipated when giving the games to Beijing. The Tibetan issue is always there. This was clearly going to be part of the last six months of the run-up to the games," John MacAloon, a University of Chicago professor and Olympic historian, said in an interview. IOC executive board member and marketing chief Gerhard Heiberg said Olympics officials can't lecture China but does raise human rights and other issues in its regular, private contacts with the Chinese. "We still maintain that the Olympics are mainly a sports event and we do not want to get involved in a sovereign state's domestic and foreign policy," the Norwegian said in an interview. "Formally we keep out of this, but of course, behind the scenes there can be silent diplomacy, trying to explain how things could hurt the success of the games. This is also important." Paris-based press freedom group Reporters Without Borders came out in favor Tuesday of an opening ceremony boycott by heads of state and government, and royalty. The president of the EU Parliament, Hans-Gert Poettering, also said politicians should consider staying away from the ceremony if the violence continues. "Calling for a complete boycott of the Olympic games is not a good solution. The aim is not to deprive athletes of the world's biggest sports event or to deprive the public of the spectacle," said Reporters Without Borders. "But it would be outrageous not to firmly demonstrate one's disagreement with the Chinese government's policies." http://apnews.myway.com/article/20080318/D8VG3QDG0.html

An update here....King Ubu made a valid point a few weeks back about "tags" on tracks giving tunes away, and that some folks actually prefer to download the tracks..... I am still a decidedly 20th century boy....KU has been a big help pointing me in the right direction of how to do all this stuff(And if you want to blame someone for the delays..., blame him! ) So, I am close to having resolved all the issues, double checking that all the tags are gone. I had a question though. Since KU sent me his address, but would rather download it,(and said others have done this in the past) does anyone else feel the same way??? Of course, I have only uploaded one track as practice, so who knows if I will be able to get a whole cd up??? I'm guessing not, but that's the optimist in me talking...
