I'm just not clear on what an equivalent album to Saxophone Colossus would be, exactly. Would we recognize it as such?
I was around when 'Saxophone Colossus' was released and - along with a lot of people - was taken over by the sheer brillance. Same thing with John Coltrane's first albums. And then when Albert Ayler's 'Spiritual Unity' exploded.
Is there any album by one of the current saxophonists that hit you in the face the same way those did in their time? I have not but would love to hear one.
No, there aren't any

You know I would have to go with Craig Handy. I had no idea he was so unsung, not mentioned once here. I've seen him live with Herbie Hancock, Roy Haynes and Freddie Hubbard and I haven't heard a better tenor player in the past ten years. I heard Steve Hall with Wallace Roney once. I believe he does have one CD out. Maybe it's self-produced.

This played as part of the New York Film Festival last night but was sold out. There was also a panel discussion between shows. Perhaps it will have a limited release now or perhaps go straight to DVD. I've seen clips of this, it's incredible. Miles is on. Wonder why they would have Crouch in the film dissing Miles' electric stuff though. That seems idiotic and certainly has no place in this film.

jazzhound, tell me how Inventions and Dimensions turns out, I didn't want to get into a bidding war with you but if it turns out to be an original mono in great shape, I might kick myself a little

A writer friend lent me an advance of this with press release. It claims to have been influenced by the Lester Young record with Nat King Cole and Buddy Rich. This record is a mess, all over the place. The "Lester Young" material is boring and shows that Byron is an average be-bop player (yes it's updated to the point where he plays bebop licks on standards). I guess they decided they couldn't do a whole record of that so they threw in Freddie Freeloader and A Silent Way (A Silent Way according to Byron in the press release is where he hears Lester's influence the most) Byron also plays tenor sax a little (quite unremarkable). There are two Byron originals that are great however and if he made a record of this stuff, I'd be happy to own it. It seem out of place on a Lester Young tribute record though. I have no idea why he did this record.

Try Pawn Hearts, my favorite, and go from there. Good band, had their moments and they have some jazz influence, not much.

Heard Latifah is doing Moody's Mood For Love and James Moody is guesting on the track.

My favorite Blue Note recording of his but even I have to admit it's an uneven date but the heights reached on this are unsurpassed (Outer Forces, Blue Spirits and Jodo), it's some of Hubbard's strongest playing. The bonus track of True Colors is also quite a curiousity.

Would have rather spent that $1,175.50 on this (if I had the money)

than the Cecil record. Pretty interesting, too bad I found out about it after the fact..

Word is big band Tuesday at Iridium, Orchestra Thursdays at Fez

Actually I think it was Minnesota. I've heard he began playing with McCoy again this summer. I wonder how he sounds, I've heard no reports.

Since this great working band has been officially documented once, then yes I'd want more. It's a great and perhaps very important era in Lee's career so to me it's not a choice of 5,000 or 5,001 but 1 or 2 and I prefer two. The sound is OK, the performances are great, the material is different than the Blue Note material and it is perhaps also from the Lighthouse

They're cool but I've used up my spending limit and refuse to give them my bank account info as well.

Word from LA is that they were incredible last night. I'm going to Saratoga.

wasn't crying, just saying. I actually wanted Detriot to beat LA

Have to give it up to the Pistons, I had no idea they were capable of this. To me though I wish they could give the MVP to Larry Brown. When all is said and done the Lakers were outcoached. In the second half, the Lakers were a confused bunch and Brown was still throwing new looks and new plays at them. Incredible coaching job. Phil's only move was to try and go small and that ended when Ben Wallace went over someones head to dunk an offensive rebound. The Pistons also had some luck through all this playing teams hurt with injuries, Kidd, Jermaine O'Neal and then worst of all Malone. I think the Lakers would have had a good chance if Malone was healthy. But that said the Pistons kicked ass. As for the Lakers, re-sign Kobe, get Malone to give it one more try, get rid of Payton (it was shocking to me how far he has fallen), get rid of Fox, get a couple of more hungry (but slightly younger) veterans and a few young athletic guys and give it another shot. I really don't think Kobe is going anywhere (not to another team or to prison, maybe divorce court). The Pistons have to re-sign Rasheed and get stronger backups at the guard position and send Darko to the summer league (imagine what they would have done with Carmelo)

Thanks for sharing that link.
Man I wish I could hear that Tyrone Washington session! Maybe I should try to become a buddy of Belden's. . . .
So that's how he did it, Bob Belden? Well maybe we could get him to offer his insights some day. Meanwhile, Weiss also talked of strong alternate takes that didn't make it to CD for some reason. Any one ever hear of rumors of what these might possibly be?

Isn't it just a bit ironic that he killed his cousin to make peace with Johnny Sack who then is arrested. If he waited another day he might not have had to do it.

this is the guy i'm talking about
link talks about him
OK, that guy. I've never seen him sitting next to Nicholson though. Everytime I see Nicholson, Altman is sitting next to him (on the right I believe). I still say the Lakers in 6, remember the 76ers won game one a few years ago.

(Do any of you Lakers fans know the identity of the older gentleman who appears to have had a courtside seat next to Jack Nicholson during every Lakers game for so many years now? The gentleman appears to be around 60 with longish white hair protruding from a hat that he never seems to be without.)
that's me!
his name is jim goldstein
he was a real estate guy
goldstein has a article in the usa today for the nba preview
he has been to every lakers play-off game
$10,000 for flights
$7,200 for hotels
$55,000 for tickets
I don't know where you got that information but the guy with the hat and the long grey hair and beard sitting next to Nicholson is film director Robert Altman

Songs for my Father is nice but I prefer Down Another Road, Mosaics, and Portraits myself. While I wouldn't compare this stuff to Mobley or Morgan it does have some of it's roots there and it is interesting music.
