  1. I just picked up a copy of this. It has some great music I've never heard before. The two basses -- Charlie Haden and David Izenson -- are really great!!

I have a question for anyone who has this. I know Disc 2 has a kind "bootleg" sound but my copy has a distictive "scratch" sound about eight minutes into the 2nd tune "Three Wisemen and the Saint" which continues until almost the end of the track. Does anyone else's copy have this "scratchy" sound on Disc 2, Track 2 or is mine defective?

    Thanks in advance!!

  2. I ordered the Sonny Stitt set today. I love Stitt and it had been on my short list of Mosaic sets to get but what convinced me to get it sooner was that I discovered that there is a session with Johnny Richards. I never knew who Johnny Richards was until picking up the Mosaic Select and really liked it a lot. I even picked up those sessions on the Fresh Sound CD so that I could hear more.

The Sonny Stitt and Johnny Richards combination just sounds so good to me (as does the rest of the box) -- I know it's gonna be great!!!! :tup:tup:excited:

PS: I don't want to hijack this thread but can any one point me to any other Johnny Richards I might need to get?

  3. I just received this yesterday and made my way through it today!!

WOW!! I concur with JSngry -- don't miss this one!! Great playing from all around.

I bought it mainly to hear Gary Peacock in his early years which I really like (since I'm a bassist). He is in fine form -- kind of in his Scott LaFaro like mode -- fantastic!! I always wondered if he and LaFaro crossed paths -- very similar approach. Wish he had done more with Bill Evans (than just the Trio 64 recording).

I think this is going to one of my favorites for the year!!!

Between Mighty Quinn and Water -- we're gettin' some great reissues! :tup:tup

  4. I'm trying to guess ahead what might be the next OOP Mosaic. I already have the Roach so I just picked up the Johnny Hodges -- set #4667 (out of, I think, a 7500 run). Looks like the Hodges might get past the 5000 mark at least!! Love the Hodges set! :tup:tup

As for the future, the Jazz Crusaders might be next -- although I may have to look at the list again and try to envision what might go OOP down the line!

  5. Glad your okay on the east coast. We thought it might be comin' up here close to the Tampa Bay area but looks like it stayed well south of us. Feel bad for our fellow Floridians in the Panhandle -- looks like it might head for them -- they keep gettin' hit!!

Whenever these things come close, I always have to think about which Mosaic set I'd have to grab if I was making a run for it -- probably my Andrew Hill set!! :o

  6. A very sad year indeed!!!

All last week I was listening to Al with Herbie Nichols (in the box set)...

hadn't listened to it in a while... little did I know this was on the horizon...

...his lines and sound were perfection...

  7. I've had the J.J. and the O'Day for awhile and they are two of my favorite sets!!!

I took a chance on the kid Ory set -- I don't have anything by him. One of my favorite things lately is exploring new music through Mosaic sets. I recently purchased the Freddie Slack and Johnny Richards Mosaic Selects and I really like them a lot even though I had never heard of either prior to these sets.

So, I'll take my chances on the Ory set too...

  8. The morning before I heard this really sad news last week I was playing his "This Is All I Ask" CD. NHOP was one of my all-time favorite bassists!!! His "Double Bass" CD with Sam Jones is one of my desert island discs along with all his other Steeplechase CDs. I've been at a loss for words all weekend.

RIP NHOP and thanks for all the great music!!!

  9. Would love to play that Emminence but have no funds at this time -- I'll have to be content with my two uprights.

Boy, your right Greg -- the company that sold Westones went belly up in the 80's -- seems like just yesterday that I heard about it -- how time flies...when you get old like me!!!!!!

I don't think I'll ever sell my Westone it is just way too cool and its become my primary electric bass!! I need to somehow post a picture of it ...and its extra neck.

  10. Greg,

Unfortunately, I think the Westones have, as we say around here, gone OOP :( but you may be able to find a used one somewhere.

I think they were made by a company named St Louis Blues or something like that and they went belly up a few years ago.

  11. Rod,

That's it!! I have that same annoying noise at the beginning of the track.

Did you or are you going to return your set for a replacement? I returned mine but received the same defective disc 6 in the replacement set.

Thanks for posting that -- now everyone can hear what we have to listen to on disc 6. :(

  12. Greg,

Your'e right -- my Westone came with both the Fretless and Fretted neck!!!

I got a really great deal on it and at first I thought that it was just a novelty bass --but this thing really plays and sounds GREAT!!! :tup

I've only ever used it as a fretless though and keep thinking that one of these days I need to put the Fretted neck on it to check it out.

The fretted neck sits right along side the fretless bass in the hard shell case !!

    John
