Thanks, I certainly agree with you on Cosmos.  The Elvin Jones Prime Element came out on CD in Japan a couple years ago.  I eagerly grabbed it and finally sold off my Elvin Mosaic box, now having everything on CD.  Waiting and hoping for the McLean High Frequency on CD so I can sell off the McLean Mosaic box, and the McLean HIpnosis on CD so that I can sell off the Moncur Mosaic Select.  Seems like the Japanese are our best hopes for this, as the BN USA business model seems more concerned with new listeners than with lifelong fans like us.

Don't forget Hutcherson "Inner Glow". But I would not sell the Mosaic Select: I like the booklet.

  2. To round ths topic up:

Jimmy Smith "The Singels" was released in Japan in 1983 on LP and did not get a CD release.

Yes, it's a compilation, and all titels ended up being bonus cuts on other Jimmy Smith CD's. I had to buy "Jimmy Smith at the organ" (Blue Note 1525) and "Softly as a summer breeze" (Blue Note 4200) twice because of them.

The only titel missing in my collection is the alternate take of "Plum Nellie", recorded 1957. 2. 12.

But I can't decide to buy the Mosaic-box only for one missing alternate take.

Many years ago, I would call Blue Note asking about certain titles and if they would ever come out on CD. One was Wayne Shorter's Etcetera. The person said they had a list of titles that would NEVER come out on CD (Etcetera was not on it). That was mysterious to say the least. What was on the list? Maybe a bunch of titles from the George Butler era?

Are there any Blue Notes that have never been on CD in any country? I am sure there are some. I am referring to titles that did exist on LP, not unissued dates.

Of course, there are more Blue Notes out there that have never been on CD.

I'm thinking of Lee Morgans "Popi", recorded in 1969 - Blue Note 45-1951.

Never seen this track on CD.

I picked up KB at the 5 Spot 2 CD expanded version the other day and I'm glad I did - enjoying the new material and like the packaging.  $25 well spent IMHO, YMMV.  Maybe now we'll get the rest of the material from the 3 Sounds at the Lighthouse, their last really good recording for me.

Give "Gene Harris of the Three Sounds" (1972) another try!

I don't like the cover, the music is great.

  12. It's Good Friday, hearing Coltrane, Crescent.

Books covering Blue Note Records: of course, Richard Cook is a must-read !

I don't know was happend with the book from Ashley Kahn "Somethin' else". Still waiting, and waiting, and waiting ... for 10 years now !

But there is "Uncompromising Expression" by Richard Havers, it is a good read, too.

It's a pity there is no colllection of the liner-notes by Bob Blumenthal for the RVG-reissues, they were great.

The best thing would be, Mr  Cuscuna would finally write the book you ask for.

  13. Richard Havers doesn't like the cover of "Total Eclipse": "Neither did Reid Miles design the cover and boy does it show. Instead of a unique Blue Note sleeve, the cover artwork could have been designed by just about any major label. One designer can sure make a difference!" (uncomproming expression, page 303)

That's right for "San Francisco", but not for "Total Eclipse". I think "Total Eclipse" has a "unique Blue Note sleeve". Great music, great Cover.

It is indeed lovely.  And may have actually been intended as a one off, maybe as a sort of thankyou for his sideman work.  Same with Art Taylor's one leader date for the label.  apparently Joe Chambers was offered a leader date and turned it down.  Both chambers and LaRoca did dates for the label decades later, but post-revival is really a different deal.

Hart to believe it was a thankyou.

LaRoca backed only 10 Blue-Note-recordings from the late 1950s to the early 1960s. 10 Blue Notes out of 500.
