  1. Found add'l info on this one at cduniverse.com:

The CD includes 11 bonus tracks not on the original LP. Personnel: Sarah Vaughan (vocals); Jimmy Jones (piano); Richard Davis (bass); Roy Haynes (drums). Recorded live at Mr. Kelly's, Chicago, Illinois in August 1957. Digitally remastered by Kiyoshi Tokiwa.

That's a killin' rhythm section! Looking forward and will probably pre-order today.

Thanks for the heads up about this one.

  2. Finally purchased my 80GB a few days ago and I'm very happy. Found free software that easily converts my PAL and/or NTSC files to a video file viewable on the iPOD. I know some folks might complain about the small screen. However, the picture is so clear and the sound so good - well, I'm happy. I did look at some available-for-purchase video screens for iPODs and Sonic Impact's Video-55 screen seems to get higher marks than the Zeon Portable DVD player with iPOD capabilities. I think they both cost around the $200 mark, though I saw the Zeon on sale for $149.99.

  3. Thanks everyone.

Funny, what led me to want to buy this CD:

I just acquired a video of the Horace Silver quintet '68 (was probably a TV show in Europe) and Billy Cobham is in the groove on this one - great as part of the group and plays a swinging and interesting solo - very straight ahead - on "Nutville." I exchanged emails with another jazz fan friend and he recommended Cobham's playing on The Art of Three.

I'll check the link provided and oh no...The Art of Four. What's a girl to do when her money is running out...wait 'til next paycheck!

    Thanks,

    Marla

  4. Thanks for the clarification, Rod. I'm looking forward to buying the 80GB two weeks from today, if all goes well. Believe it or not, the first order of business will be to see if I can add some of my jazz videos. to the iPOD. I know I may need to get some kind of conversion software. I tried it on my little SanDisk player and it worked - in fact, the SanDisk player software had converter software and I was able to see my videos on the Sandisk player. Of course, with only 2 GBs to work with, I immediately deleted! Hopefully, the iPOD will have an easy video converter interface, but somehow I doubt it!

I am looking forward to being able to load lots more of my jazz collection on the 80GB. With about 1,000 jazz CDs now doubtful I'll be able to do load all of them!

  5. Sad to hear this news about Freddie Redd. Historically, the L.A. jazz community has been very generous in offering to have benefits for those musicians in need. I've attended several benefits over the years at the Musician's Union building - I think in Hollywood? Hope something like that can be organized for Freddie. He is certainly one of "the ones" in the jazz world and deserving of a benefit to help him out.

Of course, there is always the Jazz Foundation of American in NYC...

  6. Wow! This is all great info. My 20GB iPOD (R.I.P.) was very good at doing random. I purchased an interim solution 'til I can get the 80GB, a SanDisk 2 GB player and I love it for now, but maybe because it holds less tunes, the SanDisk is not doing very good at random (or perhaps it is my lack of knowledge of programming this model).

I appreciate all the input regarding features, protective cases, where to go for a good deal on an iPOD, etc.

  7. Thanks, Aftab. I will buy one based on your recommendation. Two questions, if you don't mind:

    1) I see where the body of the iPOD is protected - what exactly is protecting the screen?

    2) Have you watched any videos on your iPOD and if so, what did you think of the audio/video quality.

I have a decent collection of jazz videos and I'm also debating the purchase of an ARCHOS MP3 video player - I think you can get them up to 120 GB and then I could really take my videos with me!

    Thank you,

    Marla

  8. Thanks Stefan and Tom. I'll check all of these suggestions. I think the bottom line is to check and check and check again right at the time I'm ready to buy - one store is going to have a better deal than all the others! What is interesting to me is that you can now get an 80GB iPOD for approx $330 and when I bought my click wheel 20GB iPOD about 3 years ago, it was $299. So, definitely a better bang for the buck on the newer iPODs (more GBs and video)!

  9. I'm enjoying the search already through Froogle and pricegrabber.com, but was very surprised to see very low merchant ratings from Circuit City (on line) and amazon.com!!! I've only purchased CDs and some small items through amazon and have always rec'd excellent service. We have a Circuit City in the 'hood, so I don't have to order on line.

  10. Are there any "deals" available when purchasing an 80GB iPOD? I might be getting a work bonus in February and if so, I'd love to replace my 20GB which died about 2 months ago. I saw the 80GB on sale through Circuit City on line for $332. Any suggestions as to where to research for best pricing?

    Thanks in advance,

    Marla

  11. Loving the Sarah Vaughan Complete Roulette Recordings at the moment. Yup, there's some schmaltzy stuff in there that Sarah was stuck doing while under contract to Roulette. However, once you get past that, there are some true gems, such as Sarah + 2. Up until I was gifted this wonderful set last week, I had the LP with many a scratch. Wonderful to have a scratchless source for this magnificent recording.

  12. To date, I have only the Buddy Rich Jazz Icons DVD. I have $ now for one more (the rest to follow as money available). Anybody recommend one over the others of the Jazz Icon series? My top choices to be narrowed down to 1 are:

    Basie

    Quincy Jones

    Blakey

    Diz

I'm leaning heavily towards the Blakey first and then the Quincy Jones since I already have quite a bit of Basie and Diz video.

    Any comments/suggestions welcomed.

    Tks,

    Marla

  13. Thanks! The only problem with checking out recommended videos is that once I get to Youtube, it is addicting and 2 jazz hours later, I'm wondering why it is almost 2 a.m. and I'm not asleep yet... I also checked out some Lee Morgan, Jimmy Smith, Freddie Hubbard, Benny Green, Maynard Ferguson, Stanley Turrentine.

    I hear ya.

    Been there, done that.

Expect to do it again, maybe even yet tonight (I mean, "this morning" - 12:30am as I'm typing this), who knows?? :g

    DAMN that Youtube. :P

Yeah!!!! So, 12:30 a.m. in Kansas City, I think, equals 1:30 a.m. where I am outside of Boston! I loved the Jimmy Smith video with the Blue Note Big Band doing "Moanin'". What a classic! I think it was the Mt. Fuji Jazz Fest. I have a few other full-length videos from Mt. Fuji - all the highest quality of music including the Jazz Messengers edition with Benny Green, Javon Jackson and I think Bobby Watson was guesting at that time, since it was well after the Watson/Ponamarev, etc. edition of the Messengers.
