Bertrand's reply above was in regards to the following question earlier in the thread:

I don't question Bertrand's information on this, but the release IS confusing. I checked out the current releases on this "Hi Hat" label and the others (about twelve or so) all appear to be live bootleg CDs: Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock, Pat Metheny, etcetera. The kind of big names that would be on major labels with lots of press attention for a new "from the vaults" live album. Plus, web searches show the Hi Hat label itself doesn't seem to have an official website or available contact information. Any more details (from anyone) would be appreciated...

When somebody tells you to fuck off, the only noble response is to demand to see the authority which bestows upon them the right to so say. This band on these recordings seem to be at once responding to a fuck off issued by the cultures of suicidal zombies masquerading as traditionalists, as well as issuing a fuck off in return on the authority of Because We Can Do THIS.

Strong people making strong music, and if any number of points it got too strong for its own good, oh well. Time took care of that, as it does all things. But before it did, these folks felt it incumbent to handle it themselves. I would humbly posit that Self Determination Music comes in many forms at many strata, and that this, whatever else it may be at any given moment, is most definitely Self Determination Music.

    Mr. JSngry,

I've enjoyed so much of your writing here at organissimo for several years. Sometimes I actually have to think. Damn funny, too.

    So thanks, finally...

  4. belated thanks - I missed sending them when you first posted your list

You are more than welcome, K.U. You went out of your way to pick up that Ray Charles Complete ABC Singles CD box for me about four years ago. That was extremely kind and I am happy to pay it back in a small (very very small) way.

  5. Btw, there's a mistake on the big Columbia box...  snip… "I've Got My Love To Keep Me Warm" (session with Jonah Jones and Ben Webster) - instead of the alternate take, at the end of the set where the collected alternates are located, the master take is sequenced again.

I'm bumping this six year old thread if nobody minds.

I found a quote from a 2002 review/analysis of the 2002 10 CD Sony set. Quoted here from a post to the Miles Davis list-serve (aka "The Miles Digest"), June 2002:

    - Quote -

Jazz Journal states that the missing tracks are:

20507-1 I've got my love to keep me warm (from "The Golden Years Vol 2")

23468-1 I've got a date with a dream (from the Lester Young Story Vol 2) This set includes take 2 twice!!

31005-3 Gloomy Sunday (from God Bless the Child)

    It also omits:

    29987-3 Let's do it

    and

    29988-4 Georgia on my mind

which are both incomplete tracks on Queen disc Q-065.

    - end quote -

2015 Questions: I've read a lot of differing information about errors/omissions in the 2002 set. Has anybody found a reliable and up-to-date analysis that has the final word about this? For instance, were some of the omissions purposely done by Sony/the producers? Does the 2009 Sony Europe reissue box of the 2002 10CD set contain the exact same "errors"?

    Thanks,

    John

  6. I'm not a Kenton fanatic or expert by any means, but the lack of an album index has bugged me ever since I bought this set in 1991 or 1992.

The only way one would be able to trace them is to go track by track in the discography, note the numbers (like "T462" or "H525") and then figure out what albums correspond to all the numbers!

I found a book by Kenton discographer Michael Sparke in the library a few years back that did most of this work. Then this past weekend I did a bit more research at discogs and at a great Chris Connor website discography I found. I think I've figured most of it out.

There are at least two typos in the Mosaic booklet's discography!! I point those two out in my list below. That being said, let me know if I've added my own errors. I've only listed the release dates of the albums if they were released years or decades later.

  8. John, I have the entire series, can't remember if there are any other unreleased alternates in the series. . . Don't think so.

    Thanks Lon.

I first saw mention of this previously-unreleased Mobley track in an October 13 2013 post hidden away in the following thread:

I thought it would be good to put a mention here in this "LT series" thread so more people can track down TOCJ-50296 before it gets hard to find/expensive.

  9. Hank Mobley- Third Season (TOCJ-50296) from this series includes a previously-unreleased alternate take of "Don't Cry, Just Sigh."

Michael Cuscuna writes in "Notes For The 2012 Version" for the TOCJ-50296 booklet:

A previously unissued alternate take of "Don't Cry, Just Sigh" is added the the album. Taken at a slightly brighter tempo and recorded immediately before the master take, it was being considered as the master according to Alfred Lion's production notes, but he then decided the last take was the best. And based on Mobley's solos, he's right.

    Michael Cuscuna

    - end quote -

Can anyone confirm if any other titles from the TOCJ-50200 CD series include previously unreleased tracks?

    Thanks,

    John

  10. Thanks for your help, guys.

very strange. my copy, which i purchased in vienna and is on rhino handmade (made in germany) has no such drop out or anomoly at all....

As you've said, very strange. A friend just e-mailed me back with info about the version of this CD he owns. His states "Made In Germany" in small print on the back cover, but it DOES switch to mono at the end. His CD's artwork has the numbers from the UPC code (81236432) where normally a Reprise Catalog number would be. Discogs.com shows this UPC/Catalogue number is the same for the Rhino UK CD and Rhino Germany CD.

    Thanks for your help.

  11. I just found the limited edition 2002 Rhino Handmade CD of Jimmy Scott "Falling In Love Is Wonderful" at a used record shop. This album was recorded in 1963 for Ray Charles' "Tangerine" label - the Rhino CD was the first-ever legal reissue.

My question: my copy of this CD switches instantly from wide stereo to mono about 30 seconds from the end of the last track, "Sunday, Monday Or Always." The fidelity also drops quite a bit (the mono section sounds like it could be a needle-drop). This audio anomaly isn't mentioned in the CD liner notes and I can't find mention of it anywhere on the web. Discogs.com does show that both Rhino UK and Rhino Germany also reissued this CD in 2002, though in slightly different packaging as compared to the US Ltd. Edition Rhino Handmade CD.

Does anyone know if all the Rhino CDs (US Handmade, Rhino UK, Rhino Germany) have this stereo-to-mono flip on the last track? Just curious.

Thanks for any info on this.

  12. RE: Ornette:

Now I have to wonder if the new reissue of New York Is Now will reinstate the original (and intended) overdubs for "We Now Interrupt For A Commercial" ... ?

To answer my own question — yes, the new TYCJ has the original Mel Fuhrman overdubs.

Thanks very much for this info. I've only heard the 1989/1990 re-mixed CD and had no idea any overdubs were missing.
