  1. Does Illinois also have a state income tax, or is the sales tax the primary source of revenue for the state?

Texas has no state income tax, so we have a relatively high sales tax, to make up for it.

And a "franchise tax" that businesses pay, and then pass the expense through the cost of their products. So, though it may not be a "state income tax" in name, it does exist here.

Having said that, it's still lower than any other state in the union and I wouldn't trade it for anything. Honestly, I once had dreams of living in Chicago until I started visiting there regularly in my late teens/early 20s, when I had my own money to spend. I still can't grasp how people afford to live up there. I definitely felt like the country mouse in the city. And this was just in Mount Prospect!

well, Al, if it makes you feel any better, we're strongly considering moving to Austin because everything is so expensive up here. For the price of our condo, we could get a house down there, have lots of live music and never have to deal with shoveling snow ever again. It's starting to seem like a really good idea.

  2. The budget is also designed to create more than 1,000 new county jobs.

It was Romney( i was not a supporter but he makes sense ,sometimes) who said in his goodbye speech

"Did you see that today, government workers make more money than people who work in the private sector. Can you imagine what happens to an economy where the best opportunities are for bureaucrats?"

I can't believe that people in our government still think its a business, creating jobs in government is

    not the answer.

a thousand county jobs ?.......a 1,000 ? what are they Johnson and Johnson , do they manufacture a product?

Sadly, this doesn't even phase me. I'm so used to high sales taxes in Cook County that another tick isn't going to make much difference. And if I'm not mistaken, taxes on food, hotels & entertainment is already at 11% as it is.

Now, I'm hardly one of these people that says that taxes are bad. But what are those taxes buying in Chicago? Better schools? Nope. More cops or preventative measures to lessen crime? Nope. I just can't see what those extra dollars are buying in Chicago. Or the suburbs for that matter.

  3. i was actually in a small trendy womens clothing boutique with my ex-girlfriend the other day, a japanese place, and the hip japanese dude working the store had on a trippy truckin'. not even a studio version. a flat out either '73 or '74 truckin' which was going into an other one it sounded like as we left but it was rocking trippy for a good fifteen minutes as my ex tried on boots. was surprised to find that in an east village hip boutique.

If you go to the dead's website, on "the taper's section" a couple of weeks back, they had a PHENOMENAL Truckin' up that had a sick 15 minute jam come out of the end. That made my day when I put that on.

If I have time, I'll track it down and let you know when it was from.

  4. I am putting him on the ignore list like I did over at AAJ before he ruins puppies and ice cream for me also.

wise move. how does someone ruin puppies and ice cream? Yikes.

    NP: 7-19-74!

That looks like a bad little set. I have to admit to having never heard Scarlet Begonias without Fire On the Mountain attached to it.

  5. Well because it's nice to have a different perspective is all. Not everybody likes the Grateful Dead, so I figured why not share some of my favorite pshychedelic bands with everybody.

Then start a different thread called: psychedelic bands that trolls like.

    Go pet Algernon now.

  6. I honestly never liked the Grateful Dead. The music just wasn't all that great. If I was going to listen to a psychadelic band or whatever you want to call them I'll listen to Ten Years After, Pink Floyd, Fever Tree, Iron Butterfly, Jefferson Airplane, Ozric Tentacles, or Vanilla Fudge. I think they said a whole lot more musically then the Grateful Dead ever did.

If you don't like the dead, then why post in this thread? It's populated by people who love the band, and with my stupid exception, will hopefully ignore you.

    Go away.

  7. And for whatever its worth Paul, Buckley subsequently declared that he was wrong for supporting segregation and wrong for opposing the Voting Rights and Civil Rights Acts and ultimately supported a national holiday for MLK. There is a far more rational and even-handed discussion of Buckley's life here at the New York Times not that you would have any reason whatsoever to read it.

You still never explained your little blasé comment at the end of your statement, but anyway...

Okay, so I read it, and I am glad to say that he backed away from his stance on segregationism. It's also interesting to note that he thought that there could be a case to be made to impeach Bush. Maybe he was slightly alright after all.

why would I have no reason to read it?

  9. Mr. Buckley departs the scene, the political movement he championed now almost universally recognized as an umbrella group of grafters, war profiteers, social misfits, science deniers, religious wackos, chicken hawks, liars, thieves, child molesters, and the mentally disordered. Nice legacy, Bill.

I thought it might be interesting if this thread went in this forum but then again I should have expected this kind of vile filth.

Will one of the mods place this thread where it belongs so that all the other liberal haters can shit on the memory of a great man without my having to read it? Thank you in advance.

Should everything that offends you be moved to some "doesn't offend Dan Gould" folder? There was no vile filth, just one guy's assessment of what a public figure was all about. Doesn't mean that I'd put it in those terms, but there was nothing vile or filthy about it.

Of course not. He was talking about republicans. How could that possibly offend anyone?

I'm not saying that republicans are an "unprotected" group (in the PC sense). However, vile isn't "that guy was a mean old man!" Vile is "That guy sure did like his cleveland steamers!"

    Big difference.

  11. Well, for those of you who...

    a) live near Chicago

    b) want to hear lil ol' me instead of whatever is happening at The Green Mill/Andy's/The Velvet Lounge

I'm playing at Cab's Wine Bar and Bistro in Glen Ellyn this Saturday, March 1st. Which is also my 33rd birthday. And the best present anyone can ever hope to have is to be surrounded by cool folks who hopefully won't throw food at you when you're done with a bongo solo.

So, for the Chicago folks, if yer interested...

  12. Got the Black Crowes stoned...

    They needed help with that?

We were standing in line for hours, and I saw one of their roadies walk by. I told him that if he got us backstage that we'd smoke him up (doesn't hurt to try, right?). He made me show him my stash, and then he took us back stage. We met the band, pulled out the pipe and we all had a taste. I asked them to play "My Morning Song" (I had seen them 12 times at that point and had never seen them play it), and they said they'd think about it. They autographed a poster for me, and then we got escorted out onto the floor. Three songs into the set, Chris starts yelling at the crowd about crowd surfing, and then says, "Oh yeah, this one's for Paul and Noah" (the guy that was with me) and then launched into the jammiest version of that song that I'd ever heard. Then, when we went nuts, the girls standing next to us got all excited that the black crowes dedicated a song to us, and we ended up hooking up with them later in the night. Not a bad way at all to turn 20, I have to say.

  13. WorldB3: ditto on Changeless. Was just listening to that the other day.

Well, there must be something in the water. I've been on a fairly huge Dead kick these days, and because my wife wants the trio to learn more 90's rock tunes, I've been going back and listening to a bunch of that stuff as well.

I just want to hear something different. And I'm in an odd spot right now where the straight ahead jazz isn't scratching that itch, but the stuff on the other side of the spectrum ain't doin' much either.

If someone's got a recommendation or two, I'm all ears.

  14. I think instead of asking whether these two genres have anything to offer each other, the question should be whether our concept of genres has anything to offer us as listeners and appreciators of music.

well, it's a quick label to steer someone in the right direction. As in, I'm not a fan of death metal, so if someone calls their band a death metal band, I'm not going to run out to go check them out.

Insofar as a hard and steady rule of thumb, though, I'd be apt to agree.

  15. "Exploring new territory..."

    "Charting new terrain..."

    "Unique..."

    "Singular..."

    "Highly recommended..."

I'm pledging not to use these again. And, yes, these are from my own damned reviews. Cliches become cliches for good reasons...

And on the "open-eared" one: how would it be possible to listen to music at all without being "open-eared"? The cliche that would make more sense in this context is "open-minded."

While I'll admit that these are all cliches, and all cliches that I've used, I've got to say that there's a difference between good cliches and bad ones.

If something is recommended, it's recommended. If something doesn't sound like much else out there, it IS unique.

That said, really, what is someone going to have to do in order to TRULY chart NEW terrain these days? Arousing an elephant while hopping on a tambourine with one foot while playing changes on a casio keytar set on the choir setting?

And, now, the Paul Abella Trio has an idea for their next album...mmmm...keytar...
