  1. I'm frankly amazed that Shorter's Night Dreamer hasn't been remastered and released as an RVG. It is his first Blue Note and a remarkable album - overshadowed by Juju and of course by Speak No Evil among the earlier BNs, but great in its own right.

I can understand wesbed's position, and have gone through periods during which that was my policy as well, but then sometimes find that I'm not happy with the remastering job (rarely the case with RVGs, though).

  2. I can't comment on the big box either, nutty, but I've thought about saving for it to be sure - more to have it all, not as a sound issue. As of now, I've got older Cole Porter and Ellington stand-alone songbooks, and a newer, remastered stand-alone Harold Arlen songbook. The Arlen has somewhat fuller sound, but honest to god, they all sound great to me. I do sort of like the cardboard digipak on the newer editions of the individual songbooks, but wonder how they'll stand up in the long term compared to standard jewel boxes. Good documentation all around.

  3. Given that, I think I'll try hanging out here for a while, if that okay with you good folks... Yes, something of an AAJ refugee here. A few of you guys may know me, and to those who don't yet - hey now!   :)

    Welcome here, gdogus!

Thanks so much for the welcome, y'all. The recent flame wars over on AAJ did make it an uncomfortable place to be, even if I wasn't involved in any of it. But maybe "refugee" is too strong a word. "Expatriate"? Remains to be seen. Let's just say that I've cosen to "live abroad" for a while... B)

  4. Mainly 50s-60s hard and post-bop here, though I've got a major soft spot for piano trios (Bill Evans...ahhhh! Keith Jarrett Trio...ahhhh!), as well as tenor/bass/drums trios (e.g., Sonny Rollins's Freedom Suite, Branford Marsalis's Trio Jeepy and The Beautyful Ones Are Not Yet Born) and...well...the mood varies, as others have said.

  5. We have to keep open doors to new members with new thoughts and personalities and ideas.

Imagine what it must be like for a new member to enter our halls...they see a very tight community and they might not feel that they belong.  They might also feel inhibited about expressing their personalies and ideas, especially if it might run counter to the prevailing Zeitgeist.

    We should welcome everybody.
