  1. Well, Mr. Deeley got his wish as the Phils re-signed JC Romero.

I gotta say though that I wouldn't be at all surprised if the Phils regret giving him a three year deal (plus an option year) for 12 million before its all over. This is a guy who took the one year deal with the Red Sox in order to re-establish his worth in the market. He's been on a downslide for a couple of years at least, mostly because he lost his feel for the strike zone. Rewarding three good months by paying him four million a year for three years is nuts. I like the Phils and hope they contend next year but I wouldn't be surprised if the fans are screaming for Romero's head sometime in 2008, certainly by 2009.

    I second your evaluation.

When JC (or as I like to call him Just Crazy) was with the Twins his slide increased with each season and at times, toward the end, with each game. He became difficult for Gardenhire to control. The pattern was that he was going to blow the lead when he used in relief and would throw a tantrum when he had to be pulled. I think the final straw was when he walked off the field before Gardenhire had the chance to take the ball from him.

$4 M is about right for a set man in today's market and two years from now it might look like a steal. I know he had difficulties w/ the Sox/Twins but the guy was pretty darn good on/off the field for us. But, you guys are right - that contract is a big gamble. The length is definitely a cause for concern. Hopefully, it will not turn out like Freddy Garcia, Adam Eaton, etc., and he will solidify the bullpen. I tell you if Lidge, Romero, Flash stay healthy and pitch like they have the Phils have the makings of a good bullpen. But I admit these are mighty big "ifs".

I'm wondering what the Mets are gonna do now?

  2. Saw this tonight.

    Frode Haltli Quartet

    with

    Frode Haltli, accordion

    Darryl Harper, clarinet

    Nils Oekland, viola/Hardanger fiddle

    Maja Solveig Kjelstrup Ratkje, voice

Free show. Maja Ratke has an amazing voice!! I only knew her from what I had read about in her in these forums and the Wire cover article from earlier this year. In between songs she dashed outside to check on her baby, who must have been all of 3 months old - if that. Frode Haltli was great too. He was able to coax some very unusual sounds from his instrument. Pretty mellow stuff which was not what I was expecting but definitely welcomed.

  3. I did a diagnosis working backwards from the speakers to the source and have narrowed it down to the turntable. It's either the stylus/cartridge or the wiring for the arm. The arm(Rega RB300) is brand spanking new as is the cartridge(Goldring 1012GX). It sounded sweet right up until I noticed that there was no sound coming out of the one channel. No indication that it was about to punk out on me. Question: is there anyway of knowing whether the problem is the wiring or the stylus without swapping out the stylus?

Go one step further in narrowing down the problem and switch the cartridge wiring between the channels (switch the cables between the sides on the cartridge). If the sound problem stays on the same channel it is the wiring/tone arm, if it changes to the other channel it is the cartridge.

BTW, the Goldring manual is available here:

    http://www.vinylengine.com/library_model.p...cted_model=1012

(there is an error with the file name, you must rename the extension to pdf)

Well I switched the cartridge wiring like you suggested and the problem stayed on the same channel. CRAP! That means I have to disassemble the arm and send it back. :rmad: :rmad: :rmad: :rmad: :rmad: :rmad:

  4. I just want to be clear you that mean male plug on the cable and not the female in preamp right? I actually tried plugging in the right channel into the left and vice versa. The problem is definitely with the left channel wire coming from the turntable.

  5. I couln't be the stylus, since the channel separation is done by the cartridge. I think the most probable cause would be either the connection between the cartridge and the arm or in the cables/connection between turntable and amplifier.

What would cause the wiring to go bad after just 5 hours of use?? Is there some kind of device that would allow me to check the output of the cables of the tonearm??

Oh yeah a multimeter. I think I can borrow one from my Father-in-Law.

I checked the connection between the cartridge and the arm - that looks good. Nothing loose. I did notice that when I have the headphones on I can hear the left channel(the channel that is not working) is putting out a little bit of sound. I mean I have to CRANK up the volume just about all the way but it's there. I tried going through the aux channel using a phono pre-amp that I had lying around and the still barely perceptible sound is coming through the left channel. When I run the cd player through the aux the sound levels are on both channels are equal. So it's definitely not the pre amp. Also I did notice that as I was putting the turntable's cables back into the pre amp's phono inputs that there was a loud "click" when I connected the right channel and a soft "click" when I pushed in the left. Normally, I would do the above procedure with the power off but in my haste I forgot to turn the pre amp off.

  7. OK. So I bought a NOS VPI HW-19Jr. back in the spring. I FINALLY hooked it up this weekend. I probably used it 5 hours total when I noticed that the left channel had gone out. :rmad: I did a diagnosis working backwards from the speakers to the source and have narrowed it down to the turntable. Question: is there anyway of knowing whether the problem is the wiring or the stylus without swapping out the stylus? I've been looking at ordering a replacement stylus and they're about $175. So before I go that route I want to make sure that's not the wiring. Help would be appreciated.

  8. Umm... no Philly dates????

Don't worry, we'll be playing Philly in April. I grew up there and my mom still lives there. She gives the band a place to stay and feeds us well (Italian Mother).

But since Rick at the Tritone died I'm not sure what's happening there. What's the best place in Philly fr us now, do you know?

Tritone is definitely still happening. You might want to get in touch w/ the guys who run R5 Productions. They book mostly indie rock all ages shows but they are all over the musical map. www.r5productions.com Johnny Brenda's is really cool new spot that opened earlier this year. Probably the best room to play in Philly. http://www.johnnybrendas.com/ Oh almost forgot about the Khyber. http://www.thekhyber.com/

  9. Holy crap. I'm not sure how I feel about this trade. I think I need a little while to digest it.

    http://www.philly.com/philly/sports/philli...lockbuster.html

    Blockbuster, indeed!

I know nothing of what they gave up, but despite the reputation that he's lost it ever since Prince Albert launched that pitch a couple of years ago, I believe Lidge remains a top-flight closer. Those hits and strikeouts per 9 IP are outstanding, and I would bet that getting away from Houston will help him mentally to finally turn the page.

Putting Myers back in the rotation strengthens it significantly. So long as Lidge doesn't have to face Pujols with the pennant on the line, I think the Phils made a great trade to strengthen the team.

Yes, I like putting Myers back in the rotation. Now the money they had earmarked for a FA starter can be used to re-sign J.C. Romero(and hopefully Rowand), who pitched really well the 2nd half of the season.

I did a little research on the 3B prospect they gave up. He struck out 157 times in Double A ball last year. I can't see that number going down as he moves up. And apparently he has no glove. So for a one year rental they didn't give up too much.

In the Faust score composed by Willem Breuker, the soprano saxophone part is being played by Frans Vermeerssen. On doctor's orders, Willem Breuker will not be part of the Kollektief ensemble at tonight's performance.

    I hope Willem is OK.

  14. [quote name='Quincy' date='Nov 3 2007, 01:03 PM' post='711637'

I put in an order (as did others here) on a "hidden" webpage for a November 9 thru 11, 1973 box. A few days later I got a polite email saying they didn't have such a thing ready. To quote "Magic Bus," I want it I want it! I have all of those shows on disc, but there are cuts in cruel places on 11/9 & 11/10. And 11/11 could use cleaning up & the HDCD treatment. So I'm hoping that's what they were hinting at, though obviously I'll take a big box of '72 too! (Especially if there are cleaner copies of the fall Texas run.)

  15. Dick's Picks is dead, Long Live "Road Trips"

A new series is born. Essentially they're no longer contained by the Dick's Pick definition (must be 2-track). It also looks like they're more willing to make compilations of tour segments, though they say they are not ruling out complete shows.

    Road Trips info

Link to the 1st Road Trip

While I know many prefer their Dead to be pre-retirement, fall '79 is very worthy of being mined and is underrepresented in the official releases. Not to be an enabler, but I know a few old-time Deadheads who visit fall '79 (and that's are far as they'll go) & enjoy it greatly when they make their rare stray from Pigpen - '74, or Pigpen - '77. Try it, you might like it. ;)

Woo hoo, it is alive again!

Well I'm one of those complete show freaks so I'm a little bummed. That said, it's good to see they are ramping up the Vault releases again.

Fall '79 has some good shows. I still think Brent was feeling his way around. But there is a certain amount of ENERGY to these performances that had been lacking in last year or so of the Keith & Donna era. My first Dead show was 11/8/79 - an OK show - definitely not as hot as the shows immediately preceding/following it. The Dancin'>Franklin's from 11/9 show is en fuego. I would have liked to have seen something from the 10/27 Cape Cod show. As one of the posters wrote, "weak sauce".
