Speaking of Chris Potter... I saw the Dave Holland Quintet last night in Philly.
This was the easily the best show(out 3 times) that I've seen the DHQ perform. Actually, I really was not that thrilled about the first two times I saw his band and was pretty much going last night to hear Steve Nelson his vibe player. Anyway, he has replaced Chris Potter w/ a flugelhorn player whose name escapes me at the moment. Also, he replaced his drummer Billy Kilson w/ another great drummer named Nate Smith. I don't know if it was the new players or just that the band was "on" last night but man they cooked. They played a lot of stuff from the "Extended Play - Live at Birdland" cd. "Free for All", "Bedouin Trail", and "The Balance" were all outstanding. Robin Eubanks, his trombone player took a 10 minute solo to begin "Bedouin". And when I write "solo" I mean the rest of the band walked off stage while he did his thing. I don't really like the trombone al that much but Eubanks was playing his ass off. And I think when the trombone is paired w/ the flugelhorn the sound blend can be quite beautiful. Nothing against Chris Potter, whom I like, but this band just sounded so much better last night w/out him.
FYI...the DHQ will be in Boston for 3 nights in early December.

and my esteemed co-worker, who's awfully good at hand cleaning an LP, takes it upon himself to spruce some up.
Shouldn't that be "my FORMER co-worker"?????
Dang.

Does anybody know if the Sunny Murray album "Hard Cores" on Philly Jazz has ever been re-issued? And does anybody have info on the Philly Jazz label in general?
AFAIK, the only Philly Jazz lp to be officially re-issued is the Sun Ra Lanquidity cd.

The late Bill Lewis should be credited as the artist for PJ1002.

The five cd set . . . Looks to me as if at the moment only Grateful Dead sites have it listed. . . ?
Yup.
FWIW, the Eyes of the World on disc one is missing about 5 minutes of music.

Weir use to take the first solo during the segue from China Cat> I Know You Rider but that stopped at some point in the 70's. I know it was the case up to the retirement.

I pulled this out today and gave it a spin. It might be my favorite official release. I can't be believe good ol' Lindsay only gave it 4 out 5 stars

I think they only did Blues For Allah 3 times 3/23/75, 6/17/75, & 8/13/75(OFTV).
-
Well apparently the title piece/suite was only played live three times, and none seem to appear in the Dick's Picks series. . . there's the one on the box set, and the one on One from the Vault, and another from August 1975 I think that I haven't located yet. . . .
One From the Vault is the August show.

I saw them last spring in Philly w/ Bardo Pond opening. Tremendous.

Saw this on another board....
I got "Beyond Description" through dead.net today...excellent sound and packaging.
Unfortunately my copy of Shakedown Street has an error during "New Minlewood Blues."
At about the 3:46 mark there is a skip, the lyrics "stealin women from their men" get cut. That part is intact on the original CD issue of Shakedown, I compared them.
Then there is another short skip after that.
Also, I hear that the next DP(DP33) is going to be a combo of 10/9-10/76.

Another look at A-Rod's interference play - "The Slap"

This past May, Max Roach was the recipient of an honorary degree from the University of Pennsylvania. He was too ill at the time to attend. This was not a surprise since Penn had been notified months before that he could not attend. In his abscence his daughter Maxine accepted the degree for him. A good friend of mine had the pleasure of escorting Maxine around for the day. My friend is a avid jazz lover and spoke at some length w/ Maxine about her father. She was very candid and told him that he wasn't doing well. Apparently it is true that he needs constant, around the clock care. My friend said that Maxine seemed to be very concerned about her father and from what she told my friend it sounded as if she was doing everything she could to make sure her father was being looked after.
Until someone can confirm that Max isn't being treated well I will continue to assume that his family is doing the right thing.

The only connection, besides the song title, is that there was a Dead cover band called "Jazz is Dead" which featured bassist Alphonso Johnson who was a former member of Weather Report.
Edit: Wait I just remembered there is one more connection - Airto Moreira. He is known to haved played a number of times w/ the Dead in the 80's during the "Drum" segements of their NYE shows.
But I hardly think that this qualifies as a WR/Dead jam.

Re: Weather Report/Dead
Never happened.

He's performing with his Ekaya septet on a 70th birthday tour. He'll be in Philadelphia on 11/6 at the Painted Bride.
I'm so there!

I might just have to buy it for the cover alone.
