Any of these will suit me as they are in my collection in one form or another.
When it comes to buying it could be a bit tricky, in the UK it's not always easy to get hold of a disc in reasonable time.

Good news, thanks for the heads up about the alternates. A possible for recording of the week?

The top man on bass clarinet has got to be David Murray.
But back to Maupin. I saw him with Jack Dejohnette a few years back and he didn't make much of an impression, maybe it was an off night. In the studio he's more disciplined and generally sounds fine.

Ordered today.

Sad news. I saw him here a few years back, a very nice approachable guy.

Thanks for the suggestion Bernard, John Patton is fine with me, as is Tina Brooks.

Today-
Gerry Mulligan; Midas Touch
Chris Lightcap; Lay-Up
World Saxophone Quartet; 25th Anniversary

Don't know much about the Water label but they did reissue Albert Ayler's Nuits de la Fondation Maeght. Both lps on one cd and made a pretty good job of it.

Did anyone mention
Marion Brown; Capricorn Moon, ESP 1022. With Alan Shorter, Bennie Maupin etc, one of my favourite ESPs.
-
That's a shame. I was just getting to like them, they seemed to offer a good service from my limited experience. I wondered why I didn't get a mailing.

My views entirely BeBop. I love early Lee Morgan, early Byrd too. All that youthful enthusiasm.

I have "Year Of The Elephant", as it's usually good to hear Wadada and he's fine in this supergroup setting. I've not tried the Threadgill's as his Columbia recordings were not been to my taste. I'm curious about the Pis though.
-
I've seen him on AAJ too.
-
Search For The New Land does it for me too, but then what about all the others, especially in the 1500 series, that's where the action really is.
-
Easy, well nearly. Empyrean Isles just makes it over Maiden Voyage.

This set is a real treasure. Despite the shortcomings already mentioned my recommendation is buy it. I've played as much if not more than anything I've bought recently.
-
This is hard, how do you choose? Plugged Nickey certainly but in the end I went for Filles. It fits every mood and can be played anytime.
-
It's cool, but I'll stay with purple for now.

I was never very keen on Spaulding until I heard him with David Murray. He seemed to fit right in there, he didn't always sound comfortable to me on some of those 60s dates. Maybe he was a man out of place or time.
Murray usually mentions The Night Of The Cookers and Louis Armstrong's "Its A Wonderful World" when he intoduces Spaulding. Not a bad heritage.

PD. From your description I'd say he the Proper "Tea for Two"is the same as the Philology version.
-
Hi Bertrand, I searched the Lord cd on the title as given. Jackie Mac has an "Offspring".
-
A search on Lord didn't come up with anything.
-
PD, I agree, there does appear to be second trumpet towards the end of "Tea For Two"

Last weekend's meeting was pretty rewarding. It's true that about 90 percent of those present (about 25, not a bad number considering the British membership) were mainly interested in swing and big bands, not necessarily white bands though. The presentations were varied and covered AFRS recordings, black British swing and most interesting for me a talk by Alan Bates on aquiring the Candid label and it's music.
On the strength of the meeting I'll be renewing my membership this year.
