  1. I'm never concerned if the music is new or old. That's always someone else's concern. So I don't know what someone's talking about when they say certain music represents "grandma's tastes." That's not the right sort of listening. Two kinds of music and all that.

Roy Ayers might be a hero to the younger hip hop/R&B/neo soul/whatever crowd, but as much as I enjoy some of it none of them have made anything as hip as Roy Ayers did in his prime.

That Glasper cites Boys II Men as an influence might partially explain his shortcomings. They were crap. Mingus is hip and will always be hip.

None of the manufactured, synthesized, music-played-to-sound-as-if-it-were-a-sample sounds as good as a sample. Hip hop will never be as great as it was when it indiscriminately yanked noises and bits from as many records as possible. The greatest rap albums of all time had countless rough clips and creative turntablism to support the rhymes. It won't ever be as good as that unless they give up trying to make some slick studio record for money and make an illegal record that flips a middle finger to the record companies and their sample police.

  2. In trying to track down all the music Led Zeppelin ripped off, I picked up their self-titled debut (the track "Taurus" might have inspired the intro to "Stairway To Heaven"). Haven't explored much further, but interesting to read about them here.

Here's a wiki entry on them.

  3. Dramatic reactions empower racial epithets. If folks simply shrugged them off, epithets would be powerless. Yet, there's all this historical context that comes along with the epithet, necessitating the prescribed reaction to its use by the wrong person. Often some who are close friends or those of the type the epithet was created for will call each other said epithet in a way which reinforces comradery. When a stranger/non-member uses the same term, it's defcon fucking 5.

All this in the face of the knowledge that we are all the same species.

A team like the Washington Redskins chose their name because Native Americans are some fierce dudes. However, I've also heard that this is the equivalent of having a team called the Washington Wetbacks or the Washington Gooks. Clearly that's not cool.

So...while philosophically I'm on the side of everybody just getting over being explosively offended by simpleminded insults coined by assholes, I'm all for not having a team that must have been named by the same sort of asshole.

  4. Kobe should hang 'em up, honestly. If he comes back, plays well, and the Lakers get the 7 seed or something, then the Lakers will probably give him an extension out of loyalty. And Bryant's giant paycheck will hurt their chances of having enough talent to win (if D'Antoni didn't already guarantee they won't be playoff-ready).

I'm curious to see how much a difference Doc Rivers can make with the Clippers. Doc's a proven winner. The Clips have the talent on paper.

  5. The James Turrell exhibit at LACMA. It was fun, lots of cool optical illusions. One in particular was very disorienting. It featured a very dimly lit room and a purple rectangle projected on the wall. As your eyes adjusted to the dim light, the rectangle would disappear into the background. Then it would re-emerge. Then it would disappear. I couldn't tell if it was being manipulated or if it was just my own eyes automatically finding it and losing it.

  6. I can't believe people are seriously questioning the musical value of Evans' work (or Wick's). Give me a break.

If this is in regard to my posts, I'm actually not. Nor do I question Rothko's. I'm just genuinely curious. And I was curious if a parallel could be drawn to painting of a less representational nature. My questions are questions, not indictments.

I've heard some of the EAI releases on our friend Jon Abbey's Erstwhile label. I'm not entirely unfamiliar. The appeal simply hasn't been clear to me. Is it offensive to want it spelled out?
