    I love the track "Water Torture" from "Slow Traffic...". I think it's superior to "Moonscapes" anyway. Well, besides cover art ;) Moonscapes has tracks like the Rahsaan Kirk tribute which, inexplicably, fades out just as it's getting going. Isn't it on Arista? Probably some producer's idea to keep the music more "accessible" :rolleyes:. I remember Pharoah Sanders had a similar album, "Love Will Find A Way", which was supposed to be "more commercial"...

    I had "Soul of Things" awhile back and was left largely unimpressed. He reminded me of a mellower Miles and I ended up selling the disk. Maybe I'm being too rash with my assesment but I have no desire to rush out and buy anything else. Just my opinion.

    Have you heard "Suspended Night"? That's a fantastic album. You should at least give him another try. You might be pleasantly surprised. :)

    Yeah, man, give that album a try. I really like that album, I think it's beautiful. His pianist (Marcin Wasilewski) is wonderful. He comes out of a Herbie Hancock/Bill Evans/Keith Jarrett influence.

    Current band has two Finns in it, Alexi Tuomarila (pno) and Olavi Louhivuori (drs), plus Anders Jormin on bass

    Anyone interested in afrobeat should check a 3CD compilation called "Nigeria 70"... I think it's oop everywhere, but you might be able to find a copy.

    Here's a nice cd, 4 of Tony Allen's LP's packed into one... Includes the amazing title track, used also in the movie "The Last king Of Scotland"

    All I'm saying, is although River is really, REALLY not that great or special of an album (it has its moments, though), I'm really glad Kanye West didn't win.

    But why do some media keep referring to 2001's Steely Dan win another "upset" for a "band way past it's prime"... Two Against Nature is one of their best, goddangit. :)

    Typical: <_< Is it just so unbelievable that someone who isn't a rock or pop artist can actually win the award? God forfreakingbid.

    LA Times among others were calling it an "upset" and the "biggest upset of the evening" or something.

    Did these guys actually make a lot of dough back then?? Because I have a feeling it's along the lines of calling Miles a sell-out after making On The Corner.

    I like a few of Corea's RTF compositions, like "No Mystery", or the stuff on Where Have I Known You Before. But I can't STAND the fusion masturbation that is Hymn Of The Seventh Galaxy. I have a copy of Romantic Warrior on my shelf also, but that's along those lines as well...

    In regards to the original topic, in my opinion it's just marketing. You can go to Amazon's website to watch a video about it...http://www.amazon.com/gp/mpd/permalink/641...layer_2_preplay . In the Jazztimes article he says: "...That’s very typical of jazz instrumentalists; we’re so dazzled by melody, harmony, textures, all those kinds of nuances, that when we hear a vocal in English it might as well be in Polish. I can’t understand the lyrics as they’re sung by anybody. I have to shove the music out to understand that it’s English, and I have a hard time doing that because the music pulls me in like a magnet.”

    And that sounds utterly ridiculous. "Might as well be in Polish"? :rolleyes:

    In regards to the current "state" of Hancock...I'm guessing I'm not the only one who's anxiously waiting for him to return to jazz, maybe with a brand new CD of new compositions. However, I have a theory. Herbie, like his mentor Miles, has always been very decisive about moving forwards, "afraid" of staying in a safe place. Maybe he's having a writer's block (in terms of jazz), and he's discovered this Pop-Jazz thing (with Possibilities and now River) is a good venue for keeping active? He also didn't write any of the music on either of those CD's. In fact - I don't think he's written any new music since the 70's..?? Also, this doesn't mean that there isn't anything worthwhile on these albums, because there is.

    maybe ECM thinks they will get more middle of the road mellow gentle ECM pat metheny keith jarrett listeners to purchase on a whim the maurpin if they removed the black man with beard and sunglasses from the cover and gave it a bland non-threatening cover to look like any old dave holland album, etc.

    This might have some truth to it... Eicher has done it before. One of the worst examples is Dave Liebman's DRUM ODE... Compare:

    I don't know, to me that Jewel In The Lotus "collage" cover always defined that LP. Regarding the music - I think I've always enjoyed the actual Mwandishi material more, not that this is bad or anything.

  20. Myspace, jazz standards and copyright?

    Does anyone know what's Myspace's take on jazz "covers" posted on one's profile? Well, I'm guessing that they don't, that's why I'm asking here first. :rolleyes: I know that it's prohibited to post other artists' mp3's per se under a "musician" profile, as well as cover versions of pop/rock songs, but how is it with modern jazz standards like Shorter, Henderson, Hubbard etc.? Under the Myspace rules it says that you should only post music that you own the copyright to ( / have composed I guess)...but it got me thinking, since us jazz folk do things a little bit differently. Like, let's say I do an arranged version of "Red Clay" and put in the info it was originally composed by Freddie?

    I haven't heard any of the recent performances, but personally I wouldn't care, as Copeland and Summers are the *real* stars in my book.

    Well, if it wasn't for Sting and his songwriting, those two would be nowhere. In fact, they pretty much were, before this reunion.

    I still have a hard time believing that Andy Summers is 64, though. :rolleyes:

    Tina Turner got me off-guard too, in a good way! Everybody plays absolutely beautifully on this, Wayne's fills and Herbie's colorful comping, although some versions (like, "Both Sides Now", of which the original is incredible) don't do it for me. I also would've maybe preferred Brian Blade to Colaiuta. It's also funny how Shorter doesn't have to play more than one note to be completely recognisable. I also think that whole bonus track business is lame and annoying.

    But man... I wish Herbie would just do another "The Prisoner" :)

    ...plus an unmistakenly original voice as a pianist / jazz instrumentalist / soloist. Two notes, and you know who it is. Plus, he is not as widely emulated (I don't think) as his contemporaries, Herbie, McCoy.
