  1. I use my "iRiver" mp3 player in conjunction with the "rec out" of my amplifier.

The "iRiver" directly encodes to mp3 at up to 320kbs, so while there is some quality loss, it's save the bother of converting your audio to mp3 (if you want to listen to your LPs on your mp3 player). Also some sound cards on computer drives (especially cheap integrated ones) are prone to background computer noises. The "iRiver" moves all background noise to produce a very clear sound. The only disadvantage is that you can't record to .wav, so if you are an audiophile and can't stand the sound of even high bit-rate mp3s it may not be the best option for you.

It works well for me at least! One of the many reasons why I prefer iRivers over iPods.

  2. I've actually yet to see a positive review of the Frisell (though I haven't looked at AMG yet :) ).... haven't heard it myself.  The lineup looks good on the face of it but I think I'll give it a skip nonetheless.

Really? I thought it was a bold departure from his usual style.

  3. wow this thread is still going. I remember it when it was only a few pages long.

For some reason or other I havn't visited this forum for almost half a year, but now that I remember in exists again, I might start posting more often :P.

  4. Also there is at least one set (3 CDRs) of his Miles tribute that is (was?) available online, for free.

King Ubu, do you have any idea where I can find these "free" CDRs?

    go here.

There are two live shows available. One is 3 discs, one is 2. Both feature ROVA, among the many musicians.

    wow thanks John B,

I see the Funny Rat thread is still alive!

I've now graduated and have a full time job. So there isn't as much time to post of forum now.

But at least I have a lot more money to buy records with :)

I really like what I've heard from Wasada Leo Smith.

Unfortunately I havn't heard too much (only his stuff on Tzadik), I havn't even heard his miles tributes yet.

  6. On friday I played a live performance of my improvisation for the first time.

I would like to hear your opinion on my piece.

You can listen to it here:

    http://members.ii.net/~bala3/pianoimprov3sep2004.mp3

The piece is an example of my total free improvisation. I have never been trained as a pianist, nor have I ever self-taught myself to play the piano in the 'proper way'. The piece represents a naive approach to improvisation. Personally I think everyone can improvise like I do, it just takes a little bit of physical effort.

The response in the concert was quite good, although one of the composers came up to me after the concert and said "I hated your piece. I have no respect for you at all". In a way I was quite glad that it had such an intense impact on him, I had originally intended the piece to be anti-music, much in the same way as the Italian Futurists.

So take a listen, and give me your honest opinion.

    Thanks,

    Geoff.

  7. My stereo system died yesterday :(

On the bright side, I bought The Golden Years Of Soviet New Jazz Vol.I 4 CD box set.

And I only paid $25 AUS (Conversion approx $17.50 US, 8 Pounds, 12 Euros) for it new!

    Wow

The bad news, is that as soon as I walked out of the shop, I dropped the bag it was in, and broke the jewel case, and it is one of those double/(double sided 4 CD carrying) cd case, which is hard to replace.

    Bah, just my luck.

  8. Is anyone here a fan of Time Berne? I have never been very impressed by his technical skill, but I have enjoyed each album of his that I have heard. Right now I am listening to Poisoned Minds: The Paris Concert, by his band Bloodcount. This disc was recorded live in 1994 and, on this recording, Bloodcount is Berne, Chris Speed on tenor and clarinet, Michael Formanek on contrabass, Jim Black on drums and Marc Ducret on electric guitar. I'm not crazy about Ducret's playing here, but the rest of the band is on fire! Overall I still prefer the Unwound box set of live Bloodcount recordings, even though the fidelity is not as good. As far as I recall Ducret is not on that set, which might be what makes the difference for me.

I believe I got the Unwound Box Set for $10 (AUS, so that is like 5 Euros/3 Pounds/$4 US).

I found it in a discount bin.

It is alright, it isn't bad but it isn't something I listen to that frequently.

  9. OK, the first phase is completed. All the CDs are arranged by alphabetic order (by first letter actually, I will arrange within each letter after I have assembled the racks). Looks like I overestimated the size of the collection - this looks more like 3-4K, which is good - I might not have to assemble all 4 racks. We'll see.

    Now - assembling.

your cd collection almost looks like a city of high rise towers.

  10. Listened to this one today:

    B00008MOV5.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

Pretty boring, no? Maybe I wasn't in the right mood, but I don't think I'll really love this one. Robinson is cool, but other than that....

I love Henry Grimes' The Call.

I don't find it boring at all!

Of course music is a subjective matter.

I beg you to give it another try though ;)

  11. Anyone heard The Free Slave by Roy Brooks, perchance?  It's also there, & looks possibly interesting.

Brooks' "Free Slave" is essential. Joyful and funky masterpiece. You can just see the musicians smiling, and on the last track there is at the moment when Woody Shaw eneters (after Coleman's solo) - and I imagine him jumping on stage in impatience: "Now I am gonna show you something!".

When I was studying I used to put this one on while getting ready to go out in night (because it has THE GROOVE) - and I would invariably be 30 minutes late, because I just HAD to finish listening the disc till the end.

I also used to do my ritual morning dance to the last track, but I'll spare you of details.

    Play your thing, Roy!

I found the original LP of this album in Mint condition!

    Lovely Album.

I also have the 32 Jazz CD version of it too.

I'm pretty sure the original mint condition LP must be worth something.

  12. Hi John.

I recieved the Jack Rose CD today.

    Thanks a whole lot.

I actually havn't sent the Sergey Kuryokhin just yet.

First my computer died on me, second I've had a few essays due at university, thirdly I've been out of cash too!

But I do promise to send you it, I have the CD purchased, so I apologise for being a bit late.

I'll hopefully post it very soon.

  13. Should be excellent, shame I'm in Australia :( since I would like to go to it.

Geoff, do you have foreign improv musicians coming often to Australia? I remember you posted your pictures of Parker, Dunmall and Kenny Wheeler, so looks somebody does manage to come - but how often it happens?

And how rich is your local imporv scene?

    ha!

I had to go to England to see Evan Parker/Paul Dunmall/Kenny Wheller!

    Australia gets nothing.

The free jazz improv seen is pretty weak here in Sydney.

    I want to go overseas.
