  1. Where? Zweitausendeins? Far from it! I got it at my local record shop. They got a bargain batch which they sell for €29.95 and they reduced the price again because I'm a regular customer leaving a lot of money there... But I got Ellis In Wonderland for €4.99 at Zweitausendeins.
  2. Thanks for the link, BM
  3. Anyone heard of Paul Hanson? Check him out! Visit YouTube and search for jazzbassoonpaul. You'll find some amazing videos including "The Making Of" his latest recording with Dennis Chambers on drums among others. Paul Hanson's website: http://www.jazzbassoon.com/

Pat Metheny Trio: Day Trio Pat Metheny, g; Christian McBride, b; Antonio Sanchez, d. I follow Pat Metheny's career from the very beginning with Gary Burton's group. And yes, I'm a dedicated fan of Pat Metheny. My two cents to Christian McBride couldn't tell anything new. Antonio Sanchez is one of the completest drummers I ever listened to. I saw him as a member of the Joshua Redman Trio at the Bix in Stuttgart. Amazing! Something for You: Eliane Elias sings & plays Bill Evans Looking forward to listening to this piece... The Miles Davis Quintet: The Legendary Prestige Quintet Sessions Special offer 4CDs box for €19.95 - couldn't resist...
  5. Hi Bev, I also enjoyed my time at AAJ, and I also haven't lost any hope that things can be sorted out. Two aspects are important for me when I decide to register to a forum. One aspect is the overall impression I get from the themes/forums offered for discussion and the way a forum is moderated. Then there are the members of a forum who make the whole thing go alive. I did no longer feel comfortable with regard to the first aspect, and watching some of the most interesting people move didn't make me feel any better. I continue to take part in the current discussion over there.....
  6. I agree that you have opined an important factor, another one, IMO, is the choice of moderators--we have some really nice guys who themselves are major contributors of content--they tend to have intolerant, self-important police types. I was banished from AAJ for 30 days by one of those goons, but he need not have bothered, I had had my fill and was gone for good as long as he was there. Yesterday, inspired by the recent influx of highly desirable posters from that board, I decided to check it out and came to the conclusion that it would take more than the elimination of Mr. Goon from Ottawa to get me back. These is nothing there to attract me and a whole lot to repel me. Enough said, glad to have y'all in the Big O community, AAJ exiles. I don't want to join in any kind of AAJ bashing at this board. But I also have to admit that it's hard to hold back because it's been almost impossible to discuss critical topics without being accused of blasphemy.
  7. same here (but Tuebingen and four years (87-91)) Hi Niko Did you study in Tübingen? I think Tübingen is still one of the most sought after places in Germany for students. A lovely old town with a very special atmosphere due to the large percentage of students.
  8. Thanks Aggie87 You know, there's been a good reason to chose my signature. I was born and raised in Northrhine-Westfalia, and moved to Stuttgart in the early '80s only. Hence I'm still rather a "Rheinländer" than "Schwabian". But I agree to you: Stuttgart is a great place for living in Germany. That's also been the reason to stay after my early retirement.
  9. Nice to see you hepcat! It comes down to this, IMO. One site views its boards largely as a way to channel traffic to its core 'business,' while the other views its boards as a genuine community. ... I don't know how many times I heard the phrase "I've got a business to run." ... as in, I can't be bothered with managing board disputes, so -- comments deleted, topic locked, member(s) banned or driven away. ... seems to me, anyways ... Nice to see you papsrus. I agree to your way of characterizing both boards. I've felt uncomfotable for some time now, and the clave/seeline "case" finally tipped the scale. My first impression here is that organissimo is a way more democratic [in its best sense] place even allowing discussions about religion which [iMO] is a really hot topic. I'm looking forward to add my [very German/European - at times] point of view though trying hard to be a world citizen.
  10. Hi all, Though having been a rather passive member for half a year now I'd like to officially join the growing group of refugees from "the other board". Nice to meet Bev, papsrus, Saundra, clave, Noj, and others again.
  11. Besides various additions and updates I started publishing a Time Line mainly based on Lothar Lewien's biography. see http://www.charliemarianotribute.de/bio.html Enjoy!
  12. HAPPY BIRTHDAY Charlie Mariano! Today Charlie Mariano celebrates his 84th birthday.
  13. Thanks for the link, Niko - I'm glad you like the site I guess the cover lists only bands and singers, and no instrumentalists. For most people who bought this recording Charlie Mariano will have been a dark horse, anyway.
  14. Thanks Thanks for making me aware of Sema Moritz. I found another recording of her, and added both to the site. see Updates
  15. Hey, thanks a lot Niko. Besides Google, ebay has been very helpful with some other items, too. I've to check this source more often. PS: One more LP in my Charlie Mariano collection...
  16. Exactly, Daniel. JSngry clarified this by PM.
  17. Yep, I mention the relation to Toshiko Akiyoshi and Monday Michiru on the Bands page. Though I've to introduce Monday on that page. Btw, the picture of Charlie Mariano on the Pictures page had been taken by Monday Michiru. Actually I'd listed "Double Image" on the Compilations/Samplers/Various page - if Monday (who - btw - is married to trumpeter Alex Sipiagin from Russia) wasn't Charlie Mariano's daughter. I got the EmArcy 538 781-2 release of "Double Image", and unfortuantely it hasn't any notes written by Charlie Mariano. If you can provide me with a scan of those notes I'd love to add them to the page.
  18. Meanwhile I've closed some gaps in Charlie Mariano's discography. I'm still struggling with the early years (1953, 1955, 1956), and there are still some items which I can't find any further details about: Jimmy Ricks: Vibrations [c1965] Thilo von Westernhagen: Theater [July 1982] Water Is Life Band [1987] The International Commission For The Prevention Of Musical Border Control [November 1991] Brothers Smahi & Charlie Mariano: Jazz meets North African Rhythms - Live [2003] Does anybody possess one of the recordings listed above? I added a lot of other stuff, e.g. articles, interviews, album reviews, concert reviews, and some more pictures and links to pictures at other sites. German pianist Johannes Schenk just announced a brand new trio album recorded early 2007 in a church with him playing pipe organ, Charlie playing alto and nagaswaram, and Ramesh Shotham playing percussion. see The Tamarind Tree Johannes Schenk offers a detailed description and some listening samples here. I already loved Charlie's recording Cathedral Vol. 1 with bassist Vitold Rek from Poland featuring German pianist Peter Reiter on pipe organ. The samples of the new recording sound very promising again [for me]. On November 5th a new duo recording should've been released in Germany, but was not yet available at my local record shop: Charlie Mariano & [keyboarder] Mike Herting: The Music Of Charlie Mariano
  19. Thanks, Bill Get these two for sure: Charles Mingus: Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus Charles Mingus: The Black Saint And The Sinner Lady I'm always very cautious when it comes to recommendations. I'm no professional musician nor am I a professional critic/writer. I'm just a humble jazz enthusiast who happens to live in the same country Charlie Mariano chose to settle. But I'll post a list of my favorites and give some hints with regard to European musicians who might not been aware to American listeners. I'm travelling to Frankfurt now to listen to some music at the German Jazz Festival in Frankfurt on Main. I'll be back at the beginning of next week. Robert G. Pettibone gives February 14, 1953 as the recording date with Bill Harris and Chubby Jackson, including the tracks C-Jam Blues, Jive At Five, Tutti-Frutti, and Sue Loves Mabel, released by Norgran EPN-7. Anyway, I'll have to add this recording. December 14, 1952 (with a question mark) is the date given for this session in Michel Ruppli's 'The Clef/Verve Labels, A Discography' book. Anyway welcome here, Hepcat! Will check further on this Mariano discography. He is one of my favorite players Thanks, brownie I'll look for additional info/sources about the Harris~Jackson session. And thanks again for your input. CU all
  21. Thanks to JSngry and brownie for pointing out missing items in my Charlie Mariano Discography. Any addition or correction is highly appreciated The info about the years from 1947 to early 1993 is mainly based on Robert G. Pettibone's sessionography to Lothar Lewien's Charlie Mariano biography "CHARLIE MARIANO - TEARS OF SOUND, Wanderer zwischen den Musikwelten." I found some minor mistakes in this sessionography, but it has been very helpful as a starting point for my investigations. Of course the earlier years are not as well documented on the world wide web (which has been my main sorce so far). I'll check this thread regularly, and investigate and add the items to the disco.
