That is a great Mosaic set. For some reason, it doesn't get the accolades. Maybe because it's Columbia & not Blue Note?
Yes, it is a gem of a set. If my memory is right I bought it in the LP version when it was on 'last chance' on the Mosaic site. Those were the days..

This LP is mono and I wish it were stereo. It has such a flat sound. Little ambiance, unless you count the reverb added to Elvin Jones' drums in places. It makes it sound like each player is in an isolation booth and when they solo, you only get the mic from that booth.
The best way to hear those JJ Columbias is likely on the Mosaic set. The only one I have on separate LP I think is 'A Touch of Satin' on a UK CBS issue.

Another spin of 'Sun Ra - Inside the Light World: Sun Ra Meets the OVC' (Strut 2LPs).
A fine previously-unissued 80s Ra session, in good studio sound (at 'Mission Control', Boston) and with nice sleeve liner and booklet, including Bill Sebastien interview.
Youtube has video of the band plus OVC light show in action with the music from a couple of tracks on this one.
Woops sorry - wrong thread !

Was tempted with this one but the box sold out quickly locally, on the day. Will be more than happy with the CDs.

Dexter Gordon Quartet 'Live at Chateauvallon 1978' (Elemental). Nice INA recording from a few RSDs back. Bonus of sleeve notes by Michael Cuscuna and Maxine Gordon.
A superb LP !

The idea of a Singers Unlimited TV show for teens on Sunday night in the 70s would be unthinkable here in the UK.
We would have more likely had T-Rex, Slade, Bay City Rollers, the Glitter creature or something from the Osmond/Cassidy corporations !

That 'Yoshis' is a really good CD. Bonus for me is that my copy came from our good friend BillF's collection, bless him.

Picked up straggler LP copies of two of the Sun Ra's (Elemental Chicago concerts plus the Strut) so that is me done for this year.
The store also had a second hand copy of David Meeker's 'Jazz in the Movies' book so added that one too.
All of the stores I visited seem to have sold their copies of the Bill Evans on Craft in super fast time.

Isn't Ruth Price the owner of The Jazz Bakery in Los Angeles?
Yes - she was (not sure if it is still going). In fact I saw her mc-ing there on a few of my visits to that venue when located at Helms Ave and even doing a vocal, although can't remember who with. She is interviewed in the booklet.

yeah, plan to get this and the Mal on CD. I suppose the Rollins and Ra too. My lone experience with Resonance LPs wasn't super great.
I've been happy with their LPs to date. The one time I did have a defective disk they shipped out a replacement from the US pretty pronto.

Thoughts?
On my list to try and snag this evening
Yeah, it's nice - and very varied stylistically too, something for everyone for the audience who were there. Originally wasn't going to get this one on LP but succumbed. Sonically it isn't audiophile but is very acceptable. I'm not a fan overall of the Yusef Atlantics and this one is very much in his acoustic/non-fusion bag. Lots of solo space for Kenny Barron, not surprisingly.

Ruth Price's presence will likely not be a bad thing! Her Contemporary LP with Manne and His Men is quite good, and her album with Johnny Smith is excellent.
On the second disk from 1966 with the Penthouse broadcasts, Ruth adds a vocal to the short 3rd track of each broadcast. Works well ! As mentioned in the booklet, she was also a good friend of Manne and helped him to scout out the location of the Manne-Hole club.

Shelly Manne and His Men 'Jazz From The Pacific Northwest' (Reel to Real 2LP)
A definite find - Monterey and Penthouse, Seattle recordings by 2 groups in good sound.

He effectively curated my whole jazz listening life, apart from the UK stuff. Right from the time I saw those brown bag twofers put out with Charlie Lourie in the little provincial shop window - as if from Mars. Huge and grateful thanks to him for this gift.

My local still had LP copies this morning so succumbed and will give it a spin later on.
Bread and jam for the next month !

He has over-done himself with good stuff this year. Thank goodness this is only an annual thing.

I second that as this would have to be in my top 5 from this category
I have a signed photo on my wall by Cecil Spiller sans Howard that must have been taken at the same time - Shelly and Max are wearing the same shirts.

Picked up the Manne on vinyl earlier today - only spun LP1 as yet but the sound of that Monterey Fest gig is very good and the playing is strong. As with the Don Ellis recording about a decade later there is a booming USCG plane buzzing the stage during Manne's drum solo on LP1 side 2.

I'm shocked and so saddened to read this, we owe him so much. A life very well lived - RIP.

Thanks! I ask because I saw the group at The Cellar Door when they were promoting that album. Cannonball, Nat, Joe Zawinul, Walter Booker and I think Roy McCurdy.
Cool. Zawinul and McCurdy are in the lineup, Victor Gaskin on bass on the LPs.

Almost picked up the vinyl of this today but the budget was already blown out of the water so resisted. The track on Ken Dryden's RSD podcast from this one sounded nice.

Thanks for that. That would explain why my 'local' didn't have it on the day.
