The dildo-with-a-love-child-of-Ernie-Kovas-and-Triumph-The-Insult-Dog-for-a-head that dominates the cover photo should have tipped me off that this was not gonna be very good, but you know me, I like a good party record as much as the next guy, right?
But...this is not very good, period. Red Seal?
.
hehe. reminded my of this Stravinski quote
"Why is it that whenever I hear a piece of music I don't like,
it's always by
Villa-Lobos?"

I picked this up a couple of months ago on the occasion of a hearing Shipp with his trio. but just saw a review of it on point of departure, so I guess that it is still new. I must admit that I have not yet given it a serious listen but on a quick listening the one thought I had is how compatible the two seem to be.

Looking forward to hear/see her again solo on organ/voice in the upcoming umbrella fest.

I'm almost 100 pages in. My main criticism so far is that Crouch spends a lot of time on broader American cultural history, which is interesting in its own right but seems to have only the most tenuous connection to Parker. I'm starting to think that this didn't need to be two volumes.
He talked about this in his interview with Ratliff and it's the part that I found interesting. he said he wanted to put Bird more in the context of his time to make him more of a "real" person to the readers.
Anyway, I am going to read it.
Yeah, but the challenge in doing that is to connect all that stuff to Parker's world. And at times it feels like he's just trying to fill up space and doesn't have a clear reason to go into his digressions.
Agreed. A master biographer to that extent is Caro, imo and his tend to be very long as well.

James Dolan strikes again. He just fired (I mean made him an "adviser") Glen Grunwald and is bringing back Steve Mills. How long before Isiah shows up again?....if he's not already an "adviser".
The most intriguing rumor I've red in this connection is that Dolan wants to trade Shumpert & Felton for Rondo but that Grunwald did not want to do it.
As both a fan of the present Knicks and Rondo I would like the deal.

Umbrella Music Fest 2013 Schedule Announced!!
THE EIGHTH-ANNUAL UMBRELLA MUSIC FESTIVAL COMES TO CHICAGO NOVEMBER 6-10
Umbrella Music is pleased to announce the full schedule and lineups for the 2013 UMBRELLA MUSIC FESTIVAL, which will take place in Chicago from November 6th-10th. Lauded as "the most impressive and adventurous jazz event of the year" by the Chicago Reader, the Umbrella Music Festival consistently presents some of the most innovative jazz and improvised music from around the world.
The festival opens with two nights of FREE concerts known as EUROPEAN JAZZ MEETS CHICAGO, co-presented by Umbrella Music and eight different European consulates and cultural organizations. This groundbreaking collaborative format, in its seventh incarnation, will take place at the Chicago Cultural Center on Wednesday, November 6th, and Thursday, November 7th.
Then, from Friday, November 8th, through Sunday, November 10th, the music moves to one of Chicago's best new venues for creative music – Constellation. This is the first year that the festival will depart from the three venues that host the weekly Umbrella Music series' that take place throughout the year - Wednesdays at the Hideout, Thursdays at Elastic, and Sundays at the Hungry Brain. Even with this move however, the festival continues to celebrate and highlight these three ongoing Umbrella Music productions. But the great acoustics, adequate size, and comfortable atmosphere of Constellation, the venue that has quickly become the center of the scene for creative and improvised music in Chicago, should serve the festival and its audience quite well.
See below for the complete schedule and lineups.

Is anyone familiar with Marquis Hill and his group The Blacktet?
I am familiar with Marquis Hill, have heard him live in various groups including prior Blacktets. He is a terrific young trumpet player. Most recently I have enjoyed him live in a trio with Matt Ulery and Makaya McCraven which -my guess since I haven't heard the record- played a bit in a freer mode than the Blacktet.

Ben Ratliff does an interview with him in today's Times, http://artsbeat.blogs.nytimes.com/2013/09/19/popcast-early-bird-and-kansas-city-lightning/?ref=books
I thought that was quite interesting.
