wesbed Posted May 13, 2004 Report Posted May 13, 2004 (edited) A friend, from Ohio, wrote to let me know her favorite radio station is no more as of today. Twenty-three years of independent radio, the future of rock and roll, comes to a close. I suppose WOXY lasted as long as it could. Times change and things change. I wasn't into the genre of music played on the station, but I know, from listening to it with my friend, that the station had its own style of programming. The end of WOXY is another sign of the power of the corporations and the generic musical tastes of the consumer. Most people, to me, seem to like to hear the same generic music they are accustomed to. Nothing new or different from the mainstream. This is the radio station that was mentioned in the movie Rain Man. http://www.woxy.com Edited May 13, 2004 by wesbed Quote
PHILLYQ Posted May 13, 2004 Report Posted May 13, 2004 Outside of college stations, independent stations are fast going the way of the dodo bird. It's becoming more and more homogenized, to the point where soon you may be able to drive cross-country and hear the same crap from east coast to west. Quote
billyboy Posted May 13, 2004 Report Posted May 13, 2004 Oh, no! This is really sad news for me. As a college student at Miami University in Oxford, OH, I listened to WOXY probably every single day. Besides playing great alternative music, the listening audience (at the time) was relatively small, so there was a great frequency of winning free concert tickets (including X and the Stranglers)and albums. I remember driving to college from my small Ohio town and feeling the sense of connectedness and 'all is right with the world' as I came within broadcasting range. And similarly, putting up with a shitload of static as I drove home trying to listen to the last strains of Camper Van Beethoven. Although I haven't been within range of this station for 15 years, I've thought of it often and have been glad that it's been out there, giving people a clear channel alternative. Quote
