Jim Dye Posted August 5, 2004 Report Posted August 5, 2004 (edited) I read an article a couple days ago in the Washington Post (subscription required) about Akin Fernandez, a Nigerian born man who lives in London. Fernandez began recording broadcasts of shortwave numbers stations about 12 years ago. Numbers stations are believed to broadcast encrypted messages to spies or agents around the world. I used to do a lot of shortwave listening when I was younger and I always wondered what those stations were. The band Wilco used and also named their album after one of the recordings on this compilation. I'm not a conspiracy theory guy. I never watched the X files or anything like that, but I find these recordings endlessly fascinating and chilling. Check 'em out. .:.impossible Posted August 5, 2004 Report Posted August 5, 2004 I heard an NPR piece on shortwave spy messaging a few years back. I don't know if it is available online, but I remember being fascinated by it. Thanks for the links guys! By the way, if you haven't heard the Wilco album YANKEE HOTEL FOXTROT, I'd recommend it.
