Spontooneous Posted August 25, 2004 Report Posted August 25, 2004 The Elenco releases are not to be confused with this fine Elanco release: Quote
Jim R Posted August 25, 2004 Report Posted August 25, 2004 I have about 20 Brazilian and Japanese elenco titles, including several of the above, but it's hard to know what to recommend without knowing a person's tastes. Overall, most of this is relatively "light" music- lots of vocals. I'm a hardcore Bossa Nova fanatic, and had to have a lot of these even if they're not among my favorites... just because they're on Elenco (a legendary label in Brazil). Anyway, here are some random points: The Sergio Mendes (BOSSA NOVA YORK) is the same recording as THE SWINGER FROM RIO (Atlantic / Collectables). That's a good one. REENCONTRO is also worth getting, IMO. The Jobim is nothing rare- I think it's the same as THE COMPOSER OF DESAFINADO PLAYS, on Verve. Check the track listings, if possible. I would recommend the Menescals (nice bossa combos, though not exactly strong instrumentally, in jazz terms) as well as the Nara Leao title. I have the Alves, as well as the Lara, and they're okay. I wouldn't recommend MAYSA- pretty syrupy, IMO. The Edu Lobo titles are probably solid... I still haven't heard those. In fact, there are several there that I've never heard (Ricardo, Miller, Almeida, Monteiro). I don't think any of those are essential. Too bad some of my favorite Elencos aren't listed (CAYMMI VISITA TOM; Baden Powell's A VONTADE; Nana Caymmi's NANA; Silvia Telles / Lucio Alves / Roberto Menescal BOSSA SESSION; EDU LOBO POR EDU LOBO; Luiz Eça's O PRESTIGIO; Silvia Telles BOSSA BALANÇO BALADA...). BTW, what's all this have to do with Emarcy? Quote
tjobbe Posted August 25, 2004 Author Report Posted August 25, 2004 (edited) Thanks Jim, at least on Jobim, I should have enough insides as well as Mendes does mean something to me (although I would have connected him more to Pop stuff as to Bossa Nova) I personally like the early Eumir Deodato stuff, as well as Baden Powell ( as well as the Jim Hall and Charlie Byrd guitar style), but mainly the Bossa stuff I have results from records where the non Braziliens adopted this (which does not mean its bad ) So I see this batch of Elenco's as nice starter to easily get hands on more "authentic stuff" Cheers, Tjobbe BTW: the Emarcy is resulting from the fact that those are listed (at least in Germany) under the Emarcy label when you try to find them in the Amazon online Catalog, which is similar to the Sonets. Jim R Posted August 25, 2004 Report Posted August 25, 2004 So I see this batch of Elenco's as nice starter to easily get hands on more "authentic stuff" Definitely! B-) If you're open to vocalists, you may even want to try a few that I didn't recommend. For many years this stuff was unavailable on CD, so it's a nice opportunity. Quote
marcoliv Posted August 27, 2004 Report Posted August 27, 2004 tjobbe Somlivre can be a good place for you to hear some snippets of those albums i'm not familiar with them but based on my personal knowledge i would recommend: Edu Lobo & Bethania Reencontro Vinicius e Caymmi no Zum Zum Ciro Monteiro Roberto Menescal Marcus Quote
jazzbo Posted August 27, 2004 Report Posted August 27, 2004 "Nara" is definitely not a bossa nova recording per se, but you may find it enjoyable none-the-less. Quote
tjobbe Posted August 27, 2004 Author Report Posted August 27, 2004 thanks all for your comments so far... meanwhile I bought - as the Chesky's were very cheap here- the Rosa Passos&Ron Carter one and even on PC with ear-kit it is so great ... Thanks, Tjobbe Quote
marcoliv Posted August 27, 2004 Report Posted August 27, 2004 Tjobbe, Lon is right. most of those titles are far away from bossa nova or hard bossa. Marcus Quote
