I don't know about heroes, but I take my hat off to any musician who can get up in front of a bunch of strangers, take chances, and play with feeling. Someone who can do that, even if it only happens once, has my admiration.

If I am going to name heroes the guy in my avatar(no not James T Cat you wiseguys) Miles and Horace Silver are three that come to mind.

Tina Brooks, Sonny Clark, Clifford Jordan come to mind.

Also Hank Mobley, Clifford Brown, Paul Desmond, Duke Ellington, Johnny Hodges, Lester Young, Art Pepper, Jackie McLean, Sonny Rollins, Louis Armstrong...gee, it's kind of hard to stop once you get started.
