Herb Posted December 29, 2004 Report Posted December 29, 2004 Hank Garland, half of the Gibson Byrdland model guitar, passed away today, he was 74. The boy could sure play jazz for a "country" picker! B-) Rest in peace, Hank. Quote
AfricaBrass Posted December 29, 2004 Report Posted December 29, 2004 Another great... At least he's now jamming with Chet Atkins, Jimmy Bryant, Grady Martin, etc... The way he used to. Quote
Jazz Kat Posted January 16, 2005 Report Posted January 16, 2005 Wow. Speaking of Garland, I just played his album, Jazz Winds From A New Direction yesterday. That album inspired George Benson to play guitar. I'm not the biggest Benson fan in the world, but I respect the jazz cuts he does, so think that it was cool, that, that album was the reason for him to take up the guitar. Quote

Well, if you're not the biggest Benson fan in the world, you might become one. Try listening to some stuff he played on as a sideman in the 60's, mostly organ stuff ala "Alligator Bogaloo" (Lou Donaldson) or "Live" (Jack McDuff). Also Hank Mobley's "Reach Out." There are others but those are just ones off the top of my head. Quote
Jazz Kat Posted January 16, 2005 Report Posted January 16, 2005 That stuff I like. I even like his Breezin' album, to some extent. I was talking about his new R&B crap, like his new release. Quote
