scottb Posted February 15, 2005 Report Posted February 15, 2005 Did my good jazz deed for the day. I was seeing a guy at work today who plays piano. Studies classical piano at the University. One of these guys that's a natural, playing by ear anything he hears every since he was a kid. Plays at church, plays some jazz, mostly classical as I mentioned. Mentioned to him about Jimmy Smith's death, he had never heard of JOS! I promptly brought him into my office and played him a sample of The Champ off the internet. He is currently headed to the record store to pick up any Jimmy he can find. Unfortunately, he may not find any unless he happens into the mom and pop downtown. But the fire is lit! He said he has access to a B3 at church so I hope he catches the bug! The world can always use another B3 player. Quote
AfricaBrass Posted February 15, 2005 Report Posted February 15, 2005 That's really cool, Scott! One nice thing about replacing my Blue Note cds with the RVGs is that I've had the opportunity to pass the old cds on to people who were unfamiliar with classic jazz. Quote

That's what I've done too. Most of my old McMasters went to another friend of mine, who likes jazz quite a bit -- but doesn't have much of a budget for new music. (And what he buys, primarily, are other kinds of music.) Sometimes he lets me give them to him. Other times he gives me about $5 a disc for them -- which is more than I'd ever get in trade credit at a used-CD store -- and quite a bit less than he'd ever find them for used. Quote
