I have only one Dave Douglas album, Soul On Soul. I like most of it, and I've been thinking that it's time to consider getting another one of his.

I went to Your Music, and they have three:

A Thousand Evenings

Freak In

Strange Liberation

Does anyone recommend one of these more than the others?

Strange Liberation is probably the most straight ahead jazz of the three, but that isnt saying much. Its a very good disc with a great band.

A Thousand Evenings is a very laid back, with an accordion player on every track. Its a god disc, but its not that jazzy.

Freeak In, wel, the title explains that.

All the discs are adventurous, just in their own way. I dont have Soul on Soul, but Im guessing it is more like Strange Liberation than the others are.

P.S. I would just buy all 3.

Stargazer and In Our Lifetime are by the same band (mostly) that did Soul on Soul. Very good recordings. Might be a little harder to find though.

Your Music now has three Dave Douglas titles available:

Strange Liberation

Keystone (CD+DVD)

Meaning and Mystery

Thanks to your recommendations of last year I got Strange Liberation.

Do you fans of Dave Douglas have a preference between the other two?

Is the Keystone DVD worthy of influencing my selection?

I don't have Meaning And Mystery (yet) but I like Keystone a great deal. As far as the DVD, it's a funny Fatty Arbuckle movie, though the print isn't in the best of shape. A friend of mine who is really into silent films found Dave's soundtrack highly inappropriate, but enjoyed the movie. I return to Keystone the CD often, and it renewed my interest in his work. Consider the DVD an odd bonus that may renew an interest in silent movies.

Of those three, "Keystone" is the odd man out. It's very heavily influenced by underground electronica and whatnot, which is either great or horrible depending on your musical preferences. "Strange Liberation" and "Meaning and Mystery" are similar to each other in style, including the same rhythm section (Uri Caine, James Genus, Clarence Penn) and two stylistically similar saxophonists (Chris Potter on "Liberation," Donny McCaslin on "Meaning"), so if you liked "Liberation" you'll like "Meaning."
