Guest che Posted March 6, 2005 Report Posted March 6, 2005 Hi. I was in Berlin last month and I picked up the album "Alone Together", which featured the talents of Brad Mehldau, Charlie Haden and Lee Konitz. The is a reasonable album and I have been playing this today. I have some other albums by Kinitz including " Live At The Half Note" which I enjoy very much. He seems to have been around for a while, anyone like his music or can recommend any albums? Che Quote
MartyJazz Posted March 6, 2005 Report Posted March 6, 2005 Well, if you liked that, you'll probably also dig the companion CD to that, ANOTHER SHADE OF BLUE, which was recorded on the same two days as ALONE TOGETHER with the same personnel. Konitz has left such a rich recording legacy, one can recommend many. I've always dug the various collaborations with Warne Marsh, as well as all the mid '50s recordings currently available on three Black Lion CDs. One of the later ones I've listened to recently that I like alot is a live date done around '79 if memory serves me correctly, JAZZ A JUAN (Steeplechase), which also features some wonderful Martial Solal. Hi Marty. I bought the album, and then never really listened to it, so I put it on today and I realised what a good album it was. Konitz has such a great sound, he reminds me of Coleman Hawkins. Thanks for the recomendation I will try and locate the album you mention. Che. Quote
couw Posted March 6, 2005 Report Posted March 6, 2005 check these threads for a *whole* lot of info: - Lee Konitz - Warne Marsh - Lee Konitz & Warne Marsh - Lennie Tristano - Tristano school seriously. Quote
Guest che Posted March 6, 2005 Report Posted March 6, 2005 I note that Konitz was influenced by Lennie Tristano, and this was reflected in his playing. Perhaps as I listen to him he reminds me of Lester Young. seriously Che. Quote
Guest che Posted March 6, 2005 Report Posted March 6, 2005 Konitz Meets Marsh (Atlantic) w/Sal Mosca, Oscar Pettiford, Kenny Clarke, B.Bauer Motion (Verve) w/Elvin Jones Spirit (Milestone/Fantasy) w/Sal Mosca Star Eyes (Hatology) w/Martial Solal David. Thanks for the recommendations. Che. Quote
Guest che Posted March 6, 2005 Report Posted March 6, 2005 You're welcome. And if you get into these, there's plenty more to recommend... I think I have said this in another thread, but the more I think I know about jazz, the little I feel I actually know. You seem to have a great deal and experience and knowledge, and I think you have seen Coltrane? Have you seen Konitz play live? Che. Quote
Guest che Posted March 6, 2005 Report Posted March 6, 2005 First saw Lee live in '58 with Lennie Tristano and Warne Marsh (also caught the three in a '65 gig at the Half Note in NYC, and Lee plus Warne in '77). Over the years I've seen Lee in many contexts, including duo with Martial Solal, but being a California resident for several decades I haven't had as much opportunity to hear him as folks in the East do. Wow! I envy your jazz experiences. Thanks for the reply. Che. Quote
