Clunky Posted March 15, 2005 Report Posted March 15, 2005 (edited) In my attempt to get a good view of the history of jazz I now find my self at Don Redman. Having scratched the surface of early Ellington , Fletcher Henderson, The Chocolate Dandies, Bennie Moten and Heny Red Allen I've arrived at Redman. Interesting material. Chant of the weed seems pretty advance arrangement for the time IMO. Vocalist Lois Deppe has a Cab Calloway like delivery whilst not being quite as super hip as Cabs ( ie more listenable). He's well featured on the wonderful Shakin the African(n)[/b (Hep CD 1001) where next McKinney's Cotton pickers? Anyone have a handle on what the second volume on Hep of Redman's is likely to contain? Edited March 15, 2005 by Clunky Quote
EKE BBB Posted March 15, 2005 Report Posted March 15, 2005 You got the first two McKinney Cotton Picker“s Frogs? If not, that could be your next step! Quote

mmilovan Posted March 20, 2005 Report Posted March 20, 2005 Listened to "Chant Of The Weed", yesterday, and find it interesting as arrangement and solo spot by Redman. Quote
