On March 30 I saw the David Wild Trio with guest Rob Lockart live at the Elephant Room, Austin, Texas.

It was quite a nice evening for me as I got to introduce two jazz buddies of mine to each other, and had the next day off so I could stay later than I usually do.

I had been looking forward to seeing the enigmatic David Wild, and I got to meet him and he's a very friendly and inteligent and vivacious man, and quite a fount of jazz wisdom. But for me the real highlight was Rob Lockart's tenor and soprano playing. This was the most advanced tenor playing I've had the joy to hear in person in the last years outside of Sam Rivers last year, and his mastery of the tenor on a blistering (tempowise) Oleo just floored the visible audience. Wow. His work reminded me of Coltrane and Henderson but he had his own style blooming. From what I gather Rob was an Austin player, left to go to NYC, and is back at least for a spell. If you get a chance to seet his man perform, take a chance, I bet you will really enjoy his playing.

Rob was around when I was living in Austin in the early-mid 80s. He truly is a monster player and a great guy. He should be better known than he is. I can hear him sounding just like you describe, Lon!

As far as I know he's been in LA for quite awhile, if he was in NYC it was fairly recently.

And (not to be picky or nothin' :) ) I believe he spells his name "Lockart".

Paul, thanks for that correction; I have edited the post above.

Yes, I remember seeing Rob in the early to mid-eighties myself, and I was just relaying what I was told by another attendee of the event re: NYC. I DO know he wasn't around this scene, he would have stood out as a pillar!
