l p Posted April 10, 2005 Report Posted April 10, 2005 since "up and at it" (with bit of strings at beginning) on "Down Here On The Ground" is an alternate take of "switchin'" (no strings) on "greatest hits" cd, then are all the strings overdubbed on the a&m releases. at least some of those tunes do sound like they could have easily been recorded without strings, and strings added at a later date. my only source "Wes Montgomery" by Adrian Ingram (1985) states that wes recorded with the strings. Jazz Kat Posted April 14, 2005 Report Posted April 14, 2005 I never thought about it. I guess he did. Quote
l p Posted April 16, 2005 Author Report Posted April 16, 2005 thanks for the replies. let's take it one step further. is it possible that some or all of the verve studio material has the orchestra overdubbed as well. Quote
Jazz Kat Posted April 16, 2005 Report Posted April 16, 2005 I'd say yes, for Verve. A&M overdubbed a lot of things also. I'd say yes, (with the help of John S.) to both recording periods. Quote
JohnS Posted April 16, 2005 Report Posted April 16, 2005 Verve overdubbed strings on Wynton and Wes! A Creed Taylor speciality. Quote
SGUD missile Posted April 16, 2005 Report Posted April 16, 2005 Creed Taylor + ( jazz artist ) + original rhythm date w/ soloist + overwhelming desire to put his "stamp" on the production + Don Sebesky ( usually ) = overdubbed jazz record ( with varying degrees of success, enhancement , malodourous bad taste, interference, or artistic success ) your mileage may vary greatly on this issue ... l p Posted April 18, 2005 Author Report Posted April 18, 2005 need verve to release a box set of the verve/a&m material, without strings overdubs. Quote
