Gary
Started a bit early just to forewarn people. After John S asked me to pick an AOTW i've been racking my brains over what to chose so I've gone for this one simply because I love it. jlhoots
I've got the other one (Such Great Friends) which is the same group minus Fortune. It's good too.

JohnS
Billy Harper is one of those playes with a stunning sound. Those first albums on Denon, Black Saint and with Max Roach really capture his sound beautifully. But when it comes to his more recent things I'm not so convinced by his playing. There seems to be more energy than substance. Fortune too has a big strong sound and for me much the same thing applies. His interpetations of Monk are his most satisfying recordings where he's more disciplined and working with stong material. I wanted to enjoy this a lot more than I did, not that it's bad. Shame because Fortune and Harper are both fine players.

JohnS
Fortune has Monk cds on Blue Note and Konnex. There's not a lot to choose between them imo.
