md655321 Posted April 15, 2005 Report Posted April 15, 2005 Well the lady friend is going to Optometry school in NYC or Philly and I get the job of supporting her (which is fine because once shes out I get her money :-)) I have been guranteed a teaching job in Manhattan or Brooklyn, I'll make about 39000. So can I live off that in Manhattan (I already plan on being poor)? Should I go to NYC? Is it possible to resist the jazz clubs? A friend suggested living in Hoboken, how is that? Thoughts on NYC or Philly? Thanks. p.s. Is anyone a principal at a Philly or NYC who wants to give me a job? I am a great teacher! Quote
Guest akanalog Posted April 15, 2005 Report Posted April 15, 2005 hoboken is for young corporate white people in peacoats. it has no flavor. avoid. it isn't particularly cheap either. Quote
Guest akanalog Posted April 15, 2005 Report Posted April 15, 2005 when i was in high school i would take the train to pier platters on weekends. i was shocked it closed down. i don't know why it did but it seems like any little city can use a hip record store. Quote
PHILLYQ Posted April 15, 2005 Report Posted April 15, 2005 Brooklyn might be a good location for you. There are still some cheap rents to be had in some decent parts of Brooklyn, and almost everywhere in Brooklyn is either walking distance or a short bus ride(free transfer) to the subway. You could try to get a job at my son's school(Andres Hudde JHS). I have absolutely no pull or influence at the school, but they do have a large number of gifted programs and my son is getting a great education there. If you're looking in any specific area in Brooklyn, send me a PM and I'll tell you what I know of the area. I'm a lifetime Brooklynite. Quote
md655321 Posted May 18, 2005 Author Report Posted May 18, 2005 Well, It looks like Im moving to Philly. In the end the cost of NY and the massive change in lifestyle was a bit much. Plus, I get to keep a car in Philly. We will probably live in the burbs for the first year. Any good places in Philly? My girlfriend will be going to shcool in Elkins Park. Also, anyone want to give me a job? and, most importantly, how are the jazz clubs there? Quote
Hardbopjazz Posted May 18, 2005 Report Posted May 18, 2005 Yeah NY is expensive, but where else can you see Bobby Hutcherson at 9PM and take a train a few stops and See Andrew Hill with Charles Tolliver at 11 PM. Quote
Peter Johnson Posted May 18, 2005 Report Posted May 18, 2005 Drop me a PM if you want to chat about Philly (I moved there when my wife started her residency, sounds like a similar situation for you guys). You do NOT want to live in Elkins Park! Want to buy a house? Quote
alankin Posted May 19, 2005 Report Posted May 19, 2005 (edited) You can get an idea of jazz happenings here: phillyjazz.Jazzmatazz.info. (Listings from earlier in the year can be found here.) I could probably also answer questions about the various venues. (And I live in Mount Airy neighborhood in Philly.) Edited May 19, 2005 by alankin Quote
md655321 Posted May 19, 2005 Author Report Posted May 19, 2005 I teach secondary History and Political Science. Basically any social studies. The jazz concerts list doesnt look that impressive. Which with my budget and time constraints is probably a good thing. Quote
Chalupa Posted May 19, 2005 Report Posted May 19, 2005 (edited) My wife's a teacher at a charter school in Philly. They might be hiring. Keep in mind that Philly schools don't pay as much as suburban schools. Edited May 19, 2005 by Chalupa Quote
md655321 Posted May 19, 2005 Author Report Posted May 19, 2005 As long as im paid more than 0 dollars like i was this year for student teaching ill be happy. If you can check if they are hiring ill be eternally grateful. If i get a job ill send you every one of my mosaics. Quote
Dr. Rat Posted May 19, 2005 Report Posted May 19, 2005 You do NOT want to live in Elkins Park! ← So what's up with Elkins park? Going the way of the older suburb. When I was looking around 7 years ago or so it looked like it was on the cusp between really hitting the skids and turning into Cheltenham, which at that time looked like an interesting mixed neighborhood. How's Germantown doing? Thought long and hard about moving there, too. --eric Quote
Chalupa Posted May 19, 2005 Report Posted May 19, 2005 Whoa. Hey Alan did you happen to catch this little snippet on the Ars Nova website??? Stay tuned for a series celebrating the 40th anniversary of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM) presented by Ars Nova Workshop and International House. Quote

Ars Nova & I House received a nice grant to fund the concerts. I don't think they have the exact lineups set. I'm really hoping they can get Braxton!
