Just picked up a vinyl reissue of this, and was curious if there was any discographical documentation of the personnel. Partially produced by James Brown (and you may or may not need to take that with a grain of salt), it's nothing "heavy" (although it's a definite change of pace from Doggett's usual fare), but whoever the bass player is is mixed really hot, and they're playing really well in the style. Not sure when this was made, wondering if it might be Bootsy? And there's a sax player who doesn't sound like a JB.

Anyway, as always, thanks in advance

Although no personnel is listed, in the liner notes from a King compilation featuring "Honky Tonk Popcorn" Hank Ballard & The Midnighters are mentioned in the same paragraph. Both Bill Doggett and Hank were working with James Brown for these "Popcorn" records simulataneously. When James went to Polydor, both went with him. Not sure if this helps.

JB really pimped out Hank Ballard, using him for one of the most blatantly bullshit "tribute speeches" ever heard on record. I forget exactly where it can be found (maybe on the Get On The Good Foot album, but Ballard's going on and on about what a freakin' messiah JB is, and you're sitting there thinking, "Damn, Hank must've hit on some REALY hard times". It's sad...

Doggett, otoh, was with King long before JB, and had a good career after leaving the Brown orbit. Good for him!

Don't get me wrong, I idolize JB's music as much as anybody, but not at the expense of realizing what a, uh... "user of people" he could be.

I really dig "Honky Tonk Popcorn." There's a lot of great playing on there and I agree about the bass player...badass. Bill Doggett sounds great too. A lost feel that musicians don't respect much these days as they chase JOS, and Larry Young around the block. That Bill Doggett shit ain't easy to play right.
