B. Goren. Posted June 21, 2005 Report Posted June 21, 2005 (edited) The great Art Blakey said that music washes away from the soul the dust of every day life. If you are looking for something to wash the dust away, this CD will do a perfect job for you: The more I listen to Harry Sweets Edison, the more I love him and learn to appreciate what a great trumpeter and musician he was. I can say exactly the same words about Eddie Lockjaw Davis. When they play together and Kenny Drew is sitting on pianist's chair, the dust has no chance and I can promise they will wash it away. If you don’t believe me try it and let me know the results. Mainstream jazz at his best. My recommendation is to listen to it with a glass of beer. Now I'm going to get another one.... Dan Gould Posted June 21, 2005 Report Posted June 21, 2005 I don't recognize the cover ... is this a new release or a reissue of earlier material? I have an LP that is Sweets/Lock/Kenny Drew, so I need to know if this is something different or more of the same? I'm with you B., Sweets and Lock were a great team. Have you either of their Black & Blue CDs? If I recall correctly, they did a single recording session and divided them up into a Sweets led date and a Lock led date. I want to say one is titled "Light and Lovely" but I don't have them handy. But if you have a source for Black & Blue CDs, I highly recommend them! Quote
B. Goren. Posted June 22, 2005 Author Report Posted June 22, 2005 (edited) Dan, I am not familiar with their Black & Blue recordings but I'll definately look for them (Just Friends? Sweets and Jaws? Just You, Just Me? ). Thanks anyway for this recommendation. Regarding the CD I've mentioned, it was recorded and released by Storyville but it is possible that the original release was 2 LPs (Vol 1 & 2). Edited June 22, 2005 by B. Goren. Quote

Just Friends and Light and Lovely are the two Sweets/Lock collaborations on Black and Blue. In addition to Jawbreakers which also gets a there is Sonny, Sweets & Jaws on the Who's Who in Jazz label, also a good 'un. Quote
