BruceH Posted July 12, 2005 Report Posted July 12, 2005 He died of cancer last Wednesday, July 6, 2005. Birthname was Salvatore Lombino I believe. Excuse me if this has been mentioned already somewhere on the board. He was one of the most prominent crime genre writers of his generation. Also wrote the script for Hitchcock's The Birds, but I can forgive that. Rest in peace, Sal/Evan/Ed. Quote
porcy62 Posted July 12, 2005 Report Posted July 12, 2005 So long Sal/Evan/Ed. He wouldn't like a longer epytaph. Quote
Randy Twizzle Posted July 12, 2005 Report Posted July 12, 2005 He also wrote "Blackboard Jungle" which I tried unsuccessfully to take out of my local library when I was 12 years old, but was refused by the librarian who said it was too "mature" for me. I suppose she didn't want me to start calling my English teacher Daddy-o. Quote
Kalo Posted July 12, 2005 Report Posted July 12, 2005 One of my favorite Akira Kurosawa films, High and Low, was based on a McBain novel! I hung out with his son Ted on occasion when he lived in the Boston area about 12 years ago, but he didn't talk about his father much at all. Quote
Kalo Posted July 12, 2005 Report Posted July 12, 2005 (edited) I just noticed that the movie of Blackboard Jungle is showing at The Brattle in Cambridge tonight and t0morrow night. Odd timing, as this had to have been planned months ago. Edited July 12, 2005 by Kalo Quote
