Speaking of Smith, here's some actual Fox News Video in which he gets his just deserts on live TV.

So some angry yahoo says fuck during a 10 second interview and that's supposed to make Smith look bad?

Sure. Ask a stupid question, get a stupid answer.

(Not to mention that Smith or his producer is technically responsible for an FCC rules violation. If it were a different network Smith might have gotten suspended or even fired over this.)

What a crock of shit that is.

First of all, "why are you still out here?" is a perfectly reasonable question to ask a moron who is ignoring an evacuation order.

Secondly, show me ANYONE who has gotten fired for something like this, let alone a case where a network's "star" anchor gets fired.

And lastly, the FCC has authority over THE PUBLIC AIRWAVES, not cable. Fox is a CABLE network and thus not under the authority of the FCC and thus NOT in violation of any "rule".

Randy has it exactly right. The yahoo looks stupid. Smith unwittingly broadcast an obscenity. Big fucking deal. And I can't STAND Smith or Fox News.

Now what may be interesting is if networks start using a seven second delay on "man in the street" interviews to avoid having this happen in the future. Had it happened on a network that the FCC has authority over and might have instituted a fine, then you probably would see that start to happen. But since there will be no fine, I imagine there won't be any long-term effect.

D'oh, I forgot about the cable/broadcast FCC distinction. Still, I think the problem wasn't the question so much as Smith's snotty tone in asking it. Smith sounded like he was less interested in hearing a real answer to his question and more interested in pointing out an idiot. And if that was his point all along, he shouldn't have thrust a microphone in the guy's face (why would you turn the mike over to someone you think is an idiot?)

Of course the yahoo comes off as stupid. That doesn't mean that Smith can't also come off as stupid. The whole disaster porn thing is stupid, period.

I can only wish well for any of you living in that area or with relatives there. It looks terrifying.

I can't even imagine living somewhere where that sort of disaster is always threatening. We get a few inches of snow here and it's an emergency situation.

I am intrigued by the way this is being covered in the UK, however. Top of the bill on the BBC News 24 channel. I don't recall the floods in India a few weeks back getting that coverage.

I suppose the news people feel that we identify more with the USA than India.

Also, the US news media is stupid enough to put reporters up and down the coast to bring us all the great footage.

It reminds me of a scene in WAR OF THE WORLDS where the world is under attack and everyone are just trying to survive then here comes a news truck heading into the battle and disappointed that Cruise's character was not on board a plane that crashed because that would've been a great story.
