Hardbopjazz Posted September 1, 2005 Report Posted September 1, 2005 I came across a live recording of the Jazz Messengers with Bishop on piano, but the date list as June 1959. It seems to be too early to my knowledge for him to be in the band. Any idea when je joined? Quote
EKE BBB Posted September 1, 2005 Report Posted September 1, 2005 Take a look at Michael Fitzgerald´s "Chronology of Art Blakey" http://www.jazzdiscography.com/Artists/Blakey/chron.htm Quote
Michael Fitzgerald Posted September 1, 2005 Report Posted September 1, 2005 You have confused Walter Bishop, Jr. with Walter Davis, Jr. - in 1959 it was Davis, who played with the band on and off in 1959-61 and then in the 1970s. But June 1959 is too early for Walter Davis, Jr. in the band, I think. Please give details of the item and I will check further. Mike Quote

I thought it should be Daivs jr. It is a live radio broadcast from Germany as well as an audience recording of a second show at that same time. The date could be incorrect too. The person that I obtained it from states the month as June and the days as the 18th and 19th. Wayne Shorter is on these two shows, and I know he didn't join the band till August. I will check your web site Mike to confirm that. I haven't listen to the 2 discs fully yet. The sound is poor on the audience recording. Edited September 1, 2005 by Hardbopjazz Quote
Michael Fitzgerald Posted September 1, 2005 Report Posted September 1, 2005 Those tapes are from November 1959, not June. The band was in Dusseldorf. Mike Quote
