DukeCity Posted September 19, 2005 Report Posted September 19, 2005 I just got a mailer from Oxford Press and two titles looked interesting to me: "The Uncrowned King of Swing: Fletcher Henderson and Big Band Jazz", by Jeffrey Magee and "Growing Up with Jazz: Twenty-Four Musicians Talk about Their Lives and Careers", by W. Royal Stokes Have any of you read either of these books? Any assessment, or recommendations either way? --Glenn Quote

Free For All Posted September 19, 2005 Report Posted September 19, 2005 I found this description which at least listed some of the interviewees, but it's from Oxford press, so you've probably seen this info already. Looks like an eclectic bunch. Growing Up With Jazz Quote
Don Brown Posted September 20, 2005 Report Posted September 20, 2005 I was very impressed with the Fletcher Henderson biography. The author has used the same approach Scott Deveaux did in his excellent book on bebop. While there are numerous musical examples (often intimidating to the non-musician) I found the book very informative. Quote

So I can check-out (literally) either of them gratis. --Glenn Quote
