Just a note to tell you about a marathon jazz concert benefit event that is happening this coming sunday (nov 20th) in Dallas, at the historic Lakewood theater. There will be 5 bands appearing. The concert runs from 1- 10pm.

The event will be catered by Carrerra's Italian Grill, and the theater will have their bar open for business!

There will be several raffle drawings held between band sets, giving away gift certificates to many area restaurants and businesses.

The Dallas Jazz Orchestra is the host band, and will play the closing set.

The other bands:

1) Quartet Out (Our very own Jsngry's two tenor quartet)

2) Dave Zoller group (w/ Genie Grant vocs)

3) The Greg Waits group

4) Mosaic (latin jazz)

5) The Dallas Jazz Orchestra

Entrance is $25, and all proceeds (including raffle sales) goes directly to Habitat for Humanity earmarked for gulf coast home replacement and aid. No musicians or volunteers are being paid to participate!

Come out and support this noble cause, and you will hear some great music and have some very good food!

For directions, please google Lakewood theater or visit www.djo.org

Btw, there was one band cancellation, hence the djo site stating 6 bands. There are actually 5 now, and they will play longer sets!

1) Quartet Out (Our very own Jsngry's two tenor quartet)

Just to clarify, Quartet Out is not "my" band. It's very much a co-operative "venture"...

Otherwise, yeah, this should be a great day of music in support of a very worthy cause, Y'all come!

Thanks to JSangry and Quartet Out for participating. Their set was strong and very musical.

I only wish that we had been able to draw a better crowd for the concert. To say the least it was underwhelming.

Aside from that, all the groups played well, and the food was excellent.

Dallas didn't know what they missed.

Sounds like it was a great concert. Wish I coulda been there. Aside from Sangrey's comments about the Dallas Jazz Community (and I have no doubt that he's correct), it would appear that the whole hurricane relief thing has fallen off the radar screens of most Americans. Not to mention the tsunami from weeks before!

A few weeks ago we did a concert here in New Mexico with some of the better local musicians, including the great clarinet player Kenny Davern, and the turn out was abysmal.

But, Greg and Jim, I hope you had some fun playing and I bet that the folks who had sense enough to take advantage of the opportunity to hear you guys were not disappointed.

It's always fun playing, and Greg busted his ass putting this thing together. But apparently asking people to pay $25 to hear what they usually get for nothing (or next to it) is just too much of an imposition (even if the money is earmarked for a more-than-worthy cause), especially when the competition is the NFL and mild weather (both of which I'm a big fan of, btw).

There's a few brave souls (less than eight, I'd guess) who xontinue to support live creative music in Dallas on an ongoing basis (the O-Board's Joe & Rod are among them, and Big Al does pretty good for a family man from the mid-cities ;) ). But really, this town is for all intents and purposes dead. D-E-A-D DEAD. The fact that the musicians of the area aren't (yet) is a testament to either our indefatigable spirit or our obtuse stupidity. Still trying to figure out which it is...
