Hardbopjazz Posted February 7, 2006 Report Posted February 7, 2006 (edited) Man I only wish I was old enough back when this was acts for the night. Edited February 7, 2006 by Hardbopjazz Quote
Hardbopjazz Posted February 7, 2006 Author Report Posted February 7, 2006 (edited) The only acts I saw at the Village gate were The Phil Woods Quartet and Jon Hendricks. They were both great. In the mid 1990's the Gate moved to 52 street right off of Broadway. I don't think it lasted too long. It was right outside the widow where I was working. Edited February 7, 2006 by Hardbopjazz Quote
7/4 Posted February 7, 2006 Report Posted February 7, 2006 I heard Take 6, Mike Stern & Quest there. Quote
Tom Storer Posted February 8, 2006 Report Posted February 8, 2006 I saw Nat Adderley there, also Dewey Redman. And on one memorable evening I started out upstairs in the bar where Jaki Byard was playing duets with a bassist--I still recall his boogie-woogie version of "Take Five"--and then went downstairs to see the Wynton Marsalis quintet, the "Black Codes" line-up. One of my greatest jazz regrets involves the Village Gate. One winter evening in the late 70's I was in New York with my girlfriend of the time and another couple. We were college students. We strolled past the Village Gate and I saw that Mingus was playing. I stopped and eagerly suggested we go in. The suggestion was nixed because my girlfriend didn't want to spend the evening having to shut up while I ignored her and dug the music. She had a point, of course, but we broke up not too long thereafter and I still think, "DAMN. Why did I listen to her?" Quote
makpjazz57 Posted February 8, 2006 Report Posted February 8, 2006 Besides seeing/hearing Buddy Rich's band and Sarah Vaughan (separate occasions) at the Gate, I attended a tribute/benefit for Papa Jo Jones w/Philly Joe, Max Roach, Freddie Waits, so many others. Marla Quote
7/4 Posted February 8, 2006 Report Posted February 8, 2006 (edited) When Organissimo played in NYC last year they were at Kenny's Castaways across the street. We were hanging on the street and checking out the Village Gate sign hanging above what is now a drug store. I keep hearing rumors that there is a space behind the store that will become the new Village Gate, but I think they're just rumors. Edited February 8, 2006 by 7/4 Quote
