connoisseur series500 Posted March 10, 2006 Report Posted March 10, 2006 I'm not a huge Frank Morgan fan, but I do own a couple of his cds. I'd go if someone else was interested. It's a work night... Quote
sheldonm Posted March 10, 2006 Report Posted March 10, 2006 ...man, if I were closer, I'd be there in a heartbeat!!! Quote

Who is in the group? I have seen him twice at the Twin Cities club the Dakota. The first time with Art Farmer & a local rhythm section and the second time with Sonny Fortune. Give it a chance on the solo tip, he has a nice live sound. He recently moved back to the Twin Cities. From what I hear he is not living a real healthy lifestyle, so you might want to takes this opportunity to see him. Quote
connoisseur series500 Posted March 10, 2006 Author Report Posted March 10, 2006 My assumption is that he will be accompanying Murphy's house band, w/ Claude Black on piano. Can't name the others. He's doing two shows (8:00 and 10:00) Quote

I've seen Frank 2-3 times since he's returned to Minneapolis and other that getting up there in age, I thought he seemed in pretty good shape. I talked with him and his family on each occasion and didn't detect anything strange....although I'm no doctor, I did stay in a holiday inn express last night! m~ Quote
HolyStitt Posted March 10, 2006 Report Posted March 10, 2006 A few years back he was supposed to play a gig in town and he didn't show up the first night. The second night he didn't show up to the first set. I am sitting at the bar having a drink in between the second set and he walks up to the bar for the gig, the bartender knows him pretty well and asks what happened, he tells the baretender that he has learned a lesson, don't ever bring weed on an airplane. jlhoots Posted March 10, 2006 Report Posted March 10, 2006 I used to see Frank all the time while he was living in Taos - not that long ago. He always seemed fine with only minimal residual from his stroke (several years ago). Quote

connoisseur series500 Posted March 14, 2006 Author Report Posted March 14, 2006 Just purchased 3 tickets to the 8:00 show. Frank will be at the Firefly in Ann Arbor on Friday as well. Looking forward to the show! Quote

Great! After you will have to share what you thought of the show. Man, he has a nice sound. Myself, I am a little bummed because I had tickets to see the Blind Boys of Alabama tonight, but the show was canceled because of the severe weather in the Minneapolis area. Quote
connoisseur series500 Posted March 14, 2006 Author Report Posted March 14, 2006 Fathead Newman will be playing in Toledo on April 1st at Murphy's; and he'll be at the Firefly in Ann Arbor the day before (March 31st.) I'll let you know how the show goes, Stitt! Quote
connoisseur series500 Posted March 18, 2006 Author Report Posted March 18, 2006 Went to see Frank Morgan playing along the Murphy's house band. Frank looked frail and sat down the entire show. He still had some good licks, and I chatted with him for a little bit; got him to sign one of his cds for me. They played a lot of Charlie Parker tunes, such as "Scrapple from the Apple," and "Now's the Time." They also played another couple of bebop tunes--I forget the titles. "All the Things you ARe," was played along with Miles Davis' "All Blues." I was pretty impressed with pianist, Claude Black. The old dude can play well. Overall, it was a geriatric crowd on stage. Aside from the drummer who was a young man, the others were all over 60 years old. Those old dudes can still swing! Fathead Newman is up next at the end of the month. Vibist Steve Hobbs is in town next week. Quote
HolyStitt Posted March 19, 2006 Report Posted March 19, 2006 He sat down both shows I have seen him play too. I just love hearing his sound live and the chance to hear Parker tunes. You'll have to tell me how Fathead goes. I had tickets to see him last month, but something came up that I couldn't rescedule. Thinking about going to Joey DeFrancesco at the Dakota this Wednesday night. Quote
