Along with the Joe Chambers cd, I picked this up on cduniverse.com. Like the Chambers cd, there are a number of covers on this album, mostly, by hint of the title, are by Bill Evans. Friedman has in the past been associated with Bill Evans in his playing, but really, they are different, as I feel Friedman has been more experimenting and outgoing in his playing; he takes more chances. This is a trio cd, with George Mraz and Lewis Nash, and to quote someone on AAJ, this thing swings! The few uptempo songs (35 w 4th st, and Blues in A Hurry) are great toe tapping fun, as are his versions of the Evans' tunes, Waltz for Debby and Bud Powell, written by Chick Corea. I highly recommend this cd.

I'm enjoying it too.

Friedman is one of those "underrated" pianists IMHO.

You'll need to pop for the 88's Japanese issue. It sounds great.

I doubt that Columbia / Sony will ever issue it in the U.S..

Released in the U.S. by the new 441 label last week. Currently available for $12.58 from CD Universe:

Don Friedman Trio - Waltz for Debby (441 Records)

The first I've heard of 441 records.

Are they going to release other originally Japanese issues?

What are the sound & other production values like?

441 Records just started issuing CDs this month. They're issuing domestic versions of sessions that were recorded at Avatar Studios in NYC for Japanese labels. (441 is the address of the studio.)

Sound is excellent. Jim Anderson is one of the engineers there.

My site lists release from 441 starting at Aug 5 and continuing through Oct.

Yeah - I see them now.

Everyone should get The Great Jazz Trio: Autumn Leaves when it comes out.

It's a "killer".

Interesting that CBS / Sony passed on some of these & an "independent" picked them up.

Hank Jones, Richard Davis & Elvin Jones.

Wow, Hank and Elvin -- they haven't played together very often lately...
