I was in LA a few weeks ago and having been intrigued by the image of Watts Towers in Harold Land's lp, "Harold in the Land of Jazz", I thought I would go to Watts to check them out. I read up on the towers before hand and very interesting story behind them. They are build from scrap metal with cement/wire mesh on them and then covered with broken bottles (lots of 7up and Squuit), sea shells, plates and maybe some other things. It took Simon Rodia about 33 years to build 17 different structures....one of them 100' tall......using no power tools or scaffolding!!! I read that during WW2, some people thought they were being used to communicate with Japanese subs  . Anyway, I thought they were pretty cool to see....here is Harold's cover and a few of my images.

I just went by in July, and I owe someone else a trip to them. Let's see if I can load a picture, although they pretty much look like those already posted.

It's certainly much more impressive than this....

I think this is a Claxton image...I read a story about this some time ago....several kids were standing around asking them what they were doing.
