SUNSHINE SPECIAL ( VJM VLP 39)

sunshine.jpg

This thirty years old VJM LP is worth to search for. It contains the music of four less known Jug Bands of the late 1920s. The first half is dedicated to Earl MacDonalds recordings - the second part are three bands who made but few recordings.

Durium (or anyone) - perhaps you can help me solve a mystery involving this LP.

A WGPH playlist lists the following four Merle Johnston Saxophone Quartet tracks as being on this LP...

Merle Johnston Saxophone Quartet: Baby, Oh Where Can You Be (VJM VLP-39 LP)

Merle Johnston Saxophone Quartet: Do Something (VJM VLP-39 LP)

Merle Johnston Saxophone Quartet: Always In All Ways (VJM VLP-39 LP)

Merle Johnston Saxophone Quartet: It's A Great Life (VJM VLP-39 LP)

I assume this catalog number is incorrect and that these items are not on the same LP as the jug bands. Any idea what the correct catalog reference for this LP might be?

Thanks for any help!!

OK, I think I've answered my own question - the sax quartet cuts are actually on VLP-59, Persian Rug. Can anyone confirm?

Chitownjazz:

Persian Rug appears to have been reviewed in Storyville 129. I can check the review tonight for details and get back to you.

Thanks Jazztrain! And I was actually able to find and purchase a copy of this LP from an online British dealer. Three of the four Merle Johnston Saxophone Quartet cuts were transcribed and recorded by the Beau Hunks Saxophone Soctette on a CD of the same name (Basta 30-9089-2). I'll be interested to hear the original recordings.
