montg Posted November 30, 2006 Report Posted November 30, 2006 I just learned about these (oh why did jazzmatazz have to vanish ) The marketing info indicates they're hybrids but the cduniverse link says sacd only. Does anyone know for sure that these are hybrids (I don't have an sacd player)? How's the music? cduniverse Chesky New York Sessions Jazz SACDs to Begin Appearing in August Chesky Records is launching a new series of Super Audio CD releases that will begin appearing in music stores in August. Titled the "New York Sessions", the releases will be taken from recording sessions at the St. Peter's Church in Chelsea, New York and will be released as Surround Sound SACDs that Chesky says "feature a host of well-known jazz artists recorded with the finest custom-built audiophile equipment in multichannel SACD format. No overdubs, no compressors, no multitracking and no large mixing consoles—so there’s nothing between you and the music." Chesky Records also says that "The New York Sessions will feature today's greatest jazz musicians recorded with Chesky Records' state of the art recording technology. The New York Sessions will preserve the sound of the greatest practitioners of American jazz while spotlighting new artists and opening new opportunities for this music. All New York Sessions titles will be released as aggressively priced hybrid SACDs. Each SACD title will have a compatible CD layer, as well as high definition stereo and multi channel versions for SACD players. The artwork for the series will feature New York's remarkable architecture and a new logo "Hi Def Jazz" will appear on the cover serving to identify these as Super Audio Compact Discs. Seven New York Sessions titles will be released this year with a significantly larger release schedule anticipated for 2007." Claude Posted November 30, 2006 Report Posted November 30, 2006 They are all hybrids, and are among the best sounding SACDs I own (more than 300). The Hazeltine anf Hank Jones are very good trio sessions, though nothing speectacular. The Coryell is very rockish. The Abercrombie is slow and meditative, too much for my taste. I haven't heard "Mysterious Shorter" yet. Quote

It's not on the Chesky homepage or on CD Universe Quote

The Payton CD ('Mysterious Shorter') looks particularly interesting to me, I'm looking forward to picking it up. Quote
Peter Friedman Posted December 4, 2006 Report Posted December 4, 2006 I Have the Christian McBride, The Hazeltine, and the Hank Jones. They are all very good, and the Hazeltine is, in my view, one of the very best things he has recorded. Quote
Kevin Bresnahan Posted December 5, 2006 Report Posted December 5, 2006 Unfortunately, Chesky is not very well distributed around my area. I've only found them at one store, Integrity 'N Music in CT. I have the Hazeltine and I agree that it is one of his best dates. The SACD layer sounds phenomenal. I want to pick up several more of these. Maybe after Christmas. Quote
