Lazaro Vega Posted February 15, 2008 Author Report Posted February 15, 2008 Wish I could broadcast the 2 hour concert version of the Relativity Suite from WKCR, yet ethically.....can't. Quote
Guest Bill Barton Posted February 15, 2008 Report Posted February 15, 2008 Great show idea, Lazaro!!!!! I fairly recently played Relativity Suite in its entirety on Bright Moments to very positive audience response. By the way, I was in the audience at the piece's world premiere at Dartmouth College just after Cherry was composer in residence there. It's one of those "ingrained in memory" concert experiences. Lazaro Vega Posted February 15, 2008 Author Report Posted February 15, 2008 No kidding -- L.D.! Was it two hours long at that concert and can you remember where it was stretched out or were there different sections excized from the record session? There's not a lot of "blowing" per se on the record.... Quote

There's not a lot of "blowing" per se on the record.... Well, this was in the days before I became a full-fledged fanatic and didn't really know many musicians by name or reputation. I can recall that Charlie Haden was definitely there and took some fairly long solos as did Cherry. I don't know who the tenor saxophonist was... He took some relatively lengthy solos too. The concert was definitely longer than the JCOA recording. Unfortunately it's more of the overall "vibe" that I can recall rather than any specific details as to where the solos stretched things out. I don't think that any "section" or "movement" was excised from the recording, but I wouldn't bet the farm on it. It took place in one of Dartmouth's smaller recital halls, not in Spaulding Auditorium, and I don't remember any sound reinforcement at all: I think that it was totally acoustic. Quote
