Guest Chaney Posted October 6, 2003 Report Posted October 6, 2003 (edited) For the more musically adventurous of you and compliments of our friend D.D., Berkshire Record Outlet has four dozen or so Leo (Records) Labs titles on sale for $2.99 each. Being the strong-willed person that I am, I resisted placing an order for several hours... and then ordered thirty-six titles! I'm only hUmAn! Edited October 6, 2003 by Chaney Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted October 6, 2003 Report Posted October 6, 2003 They also have both of the Andrew Hill "Freedom" titles circa 1974-75, for only $3.99 each. Both are outstanding. (The second one is a solo-piano date.) Webster & Kaper, Invitation. Andrew Hill, Tomorrow; Laverne; The Message; Today; Spiral; Quiet Dawn. (Andrew Hill {piano}, Lee Konitz {saxes}, Ted Curson {trumpets}, Cecil McBee {bass}, Art Lewis {drums} et al. Rooster_Ties Posted October 6, 2003 Report Posted October 6, 2003 (edited) Also, I cannot possibly say enough good things about this CD by the 20th Century German composer Henze. This is a monster work, that is well worth $20 (IMHO), but they have it for only $3.99. Think of it as a 60-minute trumpet & piano concerto (combined), and don't let the "Requiem" title throw you - there are no vocal soloists, and there is no chorus either - it is a 100% instrumental work. 5-stars, in my book. (Also, this is performed by the same group (the "Ensemble Modern") who recorded Frank Zappa's "The Yellow Shark", so you know they're really damn good.) Henze, Requiem (9 sacred concertos for piano solo, trumpet concertante & chamber orchestra. Ueli Wiget, piano. Hakan Hardenberger, trumpet. Ensemble Modern/ Metzmacher) Add to cart | Price: $3.99 | Country: AMERICA | D/A code: D | Code: SK 58972 | BRO Code: 25775 | Label: SONY/CBS | Genre: Misc.Concerti Edited October 6, 2003 by Rooster_Ties Quote
SEK Posted October 6, 2003 Report Posted October 6, 2003 I've ordered several CDs and LPs from Berkshire Record Outlet over the years, dirt cheap. Before their website, I used to order from their catalog. A few years ago, they helped satisfy a Brazilian enthusiasm that I had with some Villa-Lobos CDs. I've taken advantage of their Black Lion and Freedom offerings (Randy Weston, Andrew Hill, Abdullah Ibrahim, Monk, ...). This year, I've purchased some of their $5.99 ECM CDs, including multiple copies of Bobo Stenson's "War Orphans" (they have become popular gifts), Susanne Abbuehl's "April" (a captivating vocal disk that king ubu suggested a couple of times in his posts), and Markus Stockhausen's "Karta" (which was a marvelous surprise to me). BTW, those ECMs (and more) were there last time I checked, and I check once or twice a month. I'll have to check out which Leo Records they have and maybe that Henze trumpet-piano concerto. Quote
AfricaBrass Posted October 6, 2003 Report Posted October 6, 2003 (edited) I love Berkshire. I found about it from you guys on the BNBB. I picked up as much of the Black Lion and Freedom stuff as I could. It's also a great place to get classical music. I purchased about 15 of the Leo Lab series. As Chaney said, they are for the adventurous. Most were a little too adventurous for me. One label that I've purchased a lot of from Berkshire is Brilliant Classics. I know they are a budget label, but I've really enjoyed the performances on the cds I purchased. The cds averaged out to $2/cd. I got Wagner's Ring Cycle (I believe it was around $24), I got the complete Mahler Symphonies, but my favorite of their releases was a 40 CD Mozart Overview set. I had started collecting the Phillips Complete Mozart Edition at one point, but I just couldn't afford to keep up. The Brilliant Classics Mozart wasn't a complete Mozart collection, but it really is all the Mozart I'll ever need. Oh yeah, Henze is great! :rsmile: Edited October 6, 2003 by AfricaBrass Quote
