vajerzy Posted October 31, 2003 Report Posted October 31, 2003 I have a web site set up and want a simple and cheap community bulletin board to link to. It's for my high school class so there won't be much activity until we get closer to our 25th reunion next year. EZBOARD seems to be the cheapest but don't know much about it. I like the features of this board alot, but hosting is $10.00/month and I can't afford it long term. I was going to host with godaddy.com but open to suggestions. Opinions?? Quote
AfricaBrass Posted October 31, 2003 Report Posted October 31, 2003 I use godaddy.com for my domain names, but I've been using www.barronhosting.com for my websites. They have a the Mite 100 package that gives you 100MB of space for only $20 a YEAR. I've been running the UBB Bulletin Board on it for my family's website and it's been great. As for BB software, I'd use the software the this site uses. I believe it's free. Good luck! Quote
vajerzy Posted October 31, 2003 Author Report Posted October 31, 2003 Thanks AfricaBrass! IPB is free for unlimited trial run but you don't get support for it etc. The UBB is the same I guess- I don't trust my computer literacy for installing- How difficult do you think it is for installing phpbb?? They are free..... Quote
Jazzmoose Posted October 31, 2003 Report Posted October 31, 2003 You can't get any cheaper than EZBoard, but unless you cough up some cash, the popup ads will drive you and your former classmates right up the wall... Quote
AfricaBrass Posted October 31, 2003 Report Posted October 31, 2003 vajerzy, I actually paid for my UBB software, so I don't think it's free. Truthfully, I don't really like it that much. The Invision board is much better. I wonder what you miss out on if you go for the non-support Invision board. I've never used the support for my UBB board. As for installing the board software, it can be a little tricky, but there should be adequate instructions for doing it. I had no idea what I was doing, but somehow it all worked. The biggest trick for setting up the PHP style board was making sure I was uploading the files in the right format (ASCII or binary), but the instructions made it clear what I had to do. I had no experience in doing this. The other difficult part was setting permissions for your directories. But neither of these things were that hard to do, they just seemed difficult before I actually did it. I think you'll be fine doing it yourself. Quote
vajerzy Posted October 31, 2003 Author Report Posted October 31, 2003 Glad you have faith in me!! Love the Avatar! I thought I was going to see the cat in all parts of the world.....I know it's your Avatar's halloween costume but I can't wait to see where he'll end up next...... Quote
vajerzy Posted October 31, 2003 Author Report Posted October 31, 2003 Jazzmoose- Yes, I read that- I would go with the "Gold Community" to eliminate the ads- I'm doing this gratis for the class so I guess they're stuck with whatever I do, unless people want to donate..... Thanks for the advice! Quote
