Duke Ellington's opera Queenie Pie

Last night I saw a great performance of Duke Ellington’s “Queenie Pie” on the campus of the University of Texas at Austin. The opera includes an excellent live performance of Creole Love Call (sung by Morgan Gale Beckford – she is a student at Texas). The performance is part of a conference on Ellington (“Echoes of Ellington”). A definite must-see for fans of Duke Ellington.

“Queenie Pie, with music by Duke Ellington and text and lyrics by Betty McGettigan and Ellington, is Ellington's last large-scale work and only opera and has rarely been performed. The work holds considerable interest for its merging of musical styles: jazz, opera, and musical theater. The University of Texas Butler Opera Center, the Butler School of Music’s jazz program, and world-renowned jazz vocalist Carmen Bradford join forces to create a unique production of the work.” Queenie Pie continues through April 26: Friday, 8pm; Sunday, 7pm.
